cookin beans

I've never really bought beans in the market before other than the canned form. I'm just curious how you guys cook them?

When I buy the canned ones , I usually just microwave them or boil em /w the liquid inside the can.

any suggestions or tasty recipes?

Wow - this topic kicked of a treat!!!!!

Do you bean baked beans? Like in a tin with a tomoto sauce?

I put cheese, tobasco hot, brown sauce, sweetcorn, sausages ... anything really.

I just wanna know how to cook em. beans I eat come from cans and I just microwave em. (pinto black etc... not the bad stuff).

I'm not sure what your question is but I assume you're asking how to cook dry beans that you buy in bags.

Soak them overnight and then boil for 40 minutes. Some beans (black) may take up to 2 hours and some (aduki) make only take 25-30 minutes.

You can them keep them in the fridge for 3-4 days and add into your cooking (stews, salads).

you answered my question. thanks.

Tabasco sauce + beans = bomb.

I cook beans in a pressure cooker. It's the only thing I use a pressure cooker for. Soak beans for 8 hours. Rinse them, cover with 2" water, add a tablespoon or so of olive oil and anything else you might want (like chili powder, for instance), then set the pressure cooker for 10 pounds pressure, let it build pressure (takes a few minutes till the top weight starts to jiggle), then turn down the heat and cook for 8 minutes. Turn off heat, and let the cooker cool down on its own (that takes an hour or so, but you don't have to stick around to watch it).

I like this method because I can do the active part of cooking in about 12 minutes. I don't really have a lot of time to hang out in the kitchen watching stuff cook, but I can pretty easily cook a pot of beans while doing some other 15-minute job in the kitchen.

I cook a whole pound of beans at a time, and it makes enough for almost a week for several people. This approach works for most normal beans. Roman beans and lentils are different, so don't use those with this cooking method.

We soaked them overnight for many years before a relative told us to try just cooking them from the start without any other prep than washing them. Instead of just rinsing them in a colander, we fill the pan with water and swish them around a bit, change the water, and repeat, about three times.

We have had more success with the texture this way than we did soaking them. The cooking time seems to vary. But it will average about two hours, give or take. We season them with various things such as garlic salt, chili powder, salt pork, etc.
