conflicting information, losing weight

I just graduated from college in the spring, I was on my school's dance team, and I was spending about 3-4 hours a day dancing. I wighed in at about 130 lbs, which was probably about right for my height, but I was never satisfied with the appearance of my body. Now that I have graduated, I have stopped dancing, and intern gained about 35 lbs. I am disgusted with my body, and I have recently begun dieting and excercise, but I have only gained weight and inches. I am particularly unhappy with my stomach, it has never been tone, no matter how many crunches i do, it has this little pooch, that seems to have been there for as long as I can remember, I am aslo very unhappy with my things, they are huge and greatly out of proportion with the rest of my body. If I could make any improvements to these areas, I would be sooo happy, even if I only lose a minimal amount of weight.
So these are my questions, first of all, what am I doing wrong? Why haveent I seen any results? And second, I have read so much conflicting information on the internet, I am so confused about what the best workout regiment for me would be. Is there aryone out there who can help me?

P.s. Idf it helps at all, I am a22 year old female, 5'6", and 165 lbs.

i can understand where your coming from with the conflicting information posted all over the internet. What you need to realize is that alot of these information sources just want to sell your something.
Coming to worldfitness.com for answers is definatley a step in the right direction .. where here all the information is generally straight forward and true... (although there are a few arguments about topics here and there)
but anyways ..

you say your abs arent showing no matter how many crunches you do ... you can do 1000s of crunches a day and not have them show. The only way your going to get your abs showing is by losing bodyfat .. its as simple as that.
Doing crunches is definatley good too ... as they do tone your abs more.. but you need to do cardio to lose the fat surrounding your abs.

As of your thighs .. i dont really know wat they look like or what you want them to look like ..... but all u gota do to make them look nice 'n' toned ... is do cardio and weight training.

im sorry if this is message is long ... but im the type of person who cant just reply with a 3 word answer. so im gona keep goin ...

I think that lowering your bodyfat seems like it would suit your goals...
so this being said ... you need to educate yourself ... you need to look up information on metabolism, protein, fats, carbs (in regards to weightloss).
You need to find out how many calories you need to eat per day to lose weight ...
if your 165lbs now ... i would say eat around 1500calories per day .. and get in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Thats all you need to do to lose weight ... i know it seems like there are strings attached ... but there isnt ...
weightloss = calories burned > calories eaten...
so if you eat 1500 calories and burn 2000 calories in the same day .. you burned a net total of 500 calories for that day. 1 lbs = 3500 calories.
If you exercise for a good hour or so each day ... you can burn up to a good 1000calories per day safely... thats losing 2lbs a week ... 8lbs a month. If you wana lose more than that ... up your exercise .. dont lower your diet.
your main goal is to stay on this 1500 calorie diet... and exercise (run, bike, swim ect). Do that and you will be shedding lbs everywhere ... you just need to be consistent. And you also need to be realistic regarding the amount of time you will reach your goal ..... give yourself a month of dieting and exercises to look at yourself and look for results.. you wont see much results 3 days after you begin .... after 1 month you will see results (you will probly see some changes after a couple weeks..but try not to expect anything earlier than that).... but you wont be finished yet. Consider it a long term goal... dont expect anything too soon. Just dont EXPECT anything ... as it will for sure come ... you just have to let it come to you and suprise you.

I would also recomend high protein in your diet ... as protein is harder to digest .. your body burns more calories just trying to digest it.
Also .. try weightlifting ... when i say weightlifting i dont mean that you will get all big and buff if you start .... so dont even worry about that ... if you wanted to get muscular .. you would have to relaly try to get muscular ..
what im saying is go into the gym or buy some dumbells and do some weightlifting exercises... find out exercises you can do to help tone your muscles .... having the high protein diet will help u when toning as it will let your muscles gain shape. Weight lifting is a great fat burner..
mix all these togeher (diet, cardio, weight training) and you have the key to losing all the fat and geting your muscles looking nicer than ever.

Hopefuly that can start you off with the basic idea ..... once u understand all you need is motivation... and once u have that its really a great feeling when you commit. I can't tell you every little detail in this reply, but now that u know what i told you .... whenever u have a little question .. just post that up on this site and if its not a really in-depth question .. then it can be answered pretty easily by many people and not in essay form like this haha.
good luck and sorry for this long message... but if u gain something from reading, then its worth it.

Thnks!

Any littel bit of advice helps, and maybe its not even so much as advice, but more reassurance. I really appreciate it! :D

good luck with ur goal.

losing weight

You are in the same predicament that faces thousands of people.
I agree with most of the advice from stalefish. However I think it is even simpler than stalefish stated. The calorie thing is obvious unfortunately the reality of trying to eat less than you need is harder for people to do than they think. The high protein part be careful. I think that a balanced diet is the way to go. The body is a finely tuned piece of equipment which needs all sorts of proteins, vitamins, minerals etc. If you have an unbalanced diet you may be depriving your body of something it needs. The word diet always implies something extreme, whatever you eat is a diet. Having a diet that you can sustain for the rest of your life is the way to go. Most people that go on weight loss diets put the weight back on immediately they return to their normal diet. Remember alcohol is high in calories, not that I am saying you drink, but a lot of people forget this.
Aerobic exercise, brisk walking, bike riding, netball etc. Pushing weights, I need convincing of that.
People usually want to lose weight fast. Change your lifestyle, lose it slow it will stay off. Drink plenty of water and learn to breathe properly
Good Luck
PS Beware "dieting" and exercise don't go together and you can find yourself in trouble. You need exercise to tone your body and feel healthier and get your metabolism working efficiently. You need a good diet to feed that regime.
