Confessions of a food Junkie

I just wanted to add a little backround to my diary:

My mom has been overweight/obese for as long as I can remember and my dad is overweight too. They both have type 2 diabetes.

My mom and I were talking recently and she informed me that she was going to be going for a gastric bypass consalt with a doctor. After that I started doing some reading on it and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. There are many risks that accompany this surgery, even death ( .05 percent to 5 percent) and I even know someone who passed from this opperation.

I am scared for my mom. To me it looks like she is looking for a "quick fix" because she has not even tried to modify her lifestyle or to lose weight on her own.

The thing that got me started on wanting to get healthy was reading all this information about obesity and the possible and probable effects it has on one's health.
 
good idea to do it while you're still young too- it gets a bit harder as you get older and the bodies metabolism naturally slows down.. especially in those years approacing menopause...

You're doing the right thing - you're modifying your lifestyle... and that sets a good example for your child.. and if your husband were to pick up your habits, well he's not gonna be young forever, so gotta get the goodhabits in whiel you can..
 
I hear ya onthe job thing- I have three jobs- a health food store, a gym, and a pool hall, and when I tell people where I work, I always get that YOU work at a gym?!? reaction... but hey, as long as your confident in your abilities, and you act confident and happy, good things'll happen :)

At GNC I get a lot of customers that have had the operation done(they hafta drink loads of nasty liquid protein for a long time before they can eat real stuff bleh), and I know where your coming from there to- a lot of people don't try before they go for the "quick fix"... I hope your mom does well on it :)
 
Well today is the first day I'm going to post all food and the calories:

Breakfast:

Missed it. Slept in.


A.M. snack

1 cup of yogurt @ 40 cals
1 pickle @ 10 cals
14 oz of water @ 0 cals
For a total of 50 cals

Lunch

4 cups of Romaine Lettus @ 32 cals
10 raw baby carrots @ 35 cals
10 slices of cucumbers @ 10 cals
2 tsps of Fat Free Italian @ 10 cals
14 oz of water @ 0 cals
For a total of 87 cals

Afternoon snack

2 servings of Tostitos(52 chips) @ 520 cals(Yikes)
6 tsp of salsa @ 30 cals
14 oz of water @ 0 cals
For a total of 550 cals. :eek:

Supper

approx. 200 grams of turkey breast @140 cals
2 cups of romaine lettus @ 16 cals
5 raw baby carrots @ 17.5 cals
5 slices of cucumber @ 5 cals
1 tsp of 5 F.F. Italian @ 5 cals
2/3 cup of peas @ 70 cals
14 oz of water @ 0 cals
For a total of 253.5 cals


GRAND TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 940.5 calories

I was told that I should have around 1500-1800 cals per day....I'm a bit off...even with the chips....what am I missing??????? Oh yea...If I had breakfast that is an easy 300 more calories...maybe not so bad.

I accomplished some of my goals for the day.

I avoided the scale, I ate all my meals (except Breakfast, Imma sleepy head.)

I did not reach the 2 walks.
 
I've thought of a couple more things to add to my lists of why I want to lose weight and become healthy:

I want to be able to jump on the tampoline with my son
I want to be able to buy things that have a weight limit and be able to use them.
 
My schedual for tomorrow is as follows:

7:30 am - wake up and eat breakfast, then prepare my a.m. snack for to go.
8:00 am to 9:00am - Morning walk with my so
9:30 am - leave for dr. appointment for son
10 am - dr. appointment- eat snack immediately following
11:00 am - come home and do some laundry
12:30 pm - lunch
Afternoon- bath son, clean up house (never ending job with my son and DH)
3:00 pm - P.M. snack
4:30ish - start preparing for supper
6:00pm - supper
7:00pm - 8:00pm - evening family walk
10:00pm - bedtime lol


My Daily goals for tomorrow:

1. Wake up on time
2. Follow through with my planned walks
3. Eat all meals at appointed times
4. No binging
5. Avoid scale
6. Get some serious house work done!
 
Regarding the 1500 - 1800 per day, one thing you might be missing in the equation is the occasional dining out or other treat. Some days you will probably be under your range, and other days you might be a little over, but if you stick to that range pretty closely, you will average that amount of calories each week and you will lose weight in a healthy, maintainable way.

About your mom, you might ask her after her consultation if she is prepared for the life-long changes she will have to make to sustain weight loss after that surgery. It is not a quick and easy fix, and if the patient does not drastically change the way they eat - forever - following the surgery, they will put back the weight fast, and they will risk illness or even death. It is really not something to be taken lightly.
 
I 100 percent agree with you about it not being a quick fix, but that's how it seems she looks at it. I've done a lot of reading and I actually know a person who died from this surgery so it is all that more real for me.

This person died because she kept trying to eat the same way she did before and had extremely bad diarhea and vommiting and she died from that.

I wish my mom and I lived in the same town or even within an hours drive because I would try and take her along on my new lifestyle.

My mom is over 300 lbs and she is in severe denial about it! I mean she knows she obese but she's in denial about why! She always has some excuse as to why she can't change her lifestyle and it is so fusterating for me because I love her soooooo much and we both know that if she doesn't do something, she will die an early death. :(

That is why I am committed to doing this! I will not end up in the position my parents are in. I refuse. This is MY life and I have to be my own best friend. No one else can do this for me and I can only pray that my example will shine for the rest of my family!

I'm just reading your diary. I'm so glad you joined us. I have only been here a couple of weeks, but I can tell you that for the first time in my life I know I can lose weight. I know I am going to have days that I don't do well, but I can live with that. One thing that I have been really trying to do is look at food as strictly nutrition. This is difficult because I am a binger, big time. The severity of my binges have been much less over the last year or so, but I still put food in my mouth when I'm not even hungry and I could easily just snack all night long if I let myself. I have read some of your posts on other threads and I know that you can relate.

So far what has worked for me (in my 2 weeks) is keeping busy. If I feel like I need to start eating, I try to take a moment to evaluate what I am really feeling. Am I bored, tired, thirsty, anxious...whatever. I then guzzle a bunch of water and hope for the best! Just Kidding--although it is probably not all that far from the truth. I'll start cleaning or start a project. Go do yard work or whatever to stop myself from eating. Anyway....I'm just starting too, but I hope I can help you like everyone here has helped me.

I'm just checking in this morning. I have ate breakfast yay me! but I have to leave early for this docs appointment so I will be back later to post the rest!
 
you might want to ask your doctor for a suggested meal plan (that is unless it's an eye doctor or soemthing) I've read a lot of doctors lately are pushing the mediterrean style diet because it's heart healthy... :)
 
Oh ,actually the doc's appointment was for my son's ears. When he was a baby he had mutiple ear infections which cause a fluid build up behind his ear drums and he had to have surgery to fix it. We just went to get a new pair of plugs for his ears.


Me, I avoid the doctor unless I have a plague. I know that's bad but I seriously don't care at this point. I had a few bad experiences with doctors when I was 16 and I will only go to a female doctor or if I am dying basically.


Anywho, I think I am doing pretty good with my food choices and calories. I know it's a hell of a lot better than it was before. I swear my calorie in take is about half (give or take) than what I used to and I only get foods with the heart healthy symbols from the heart and stroke foundation and the diabetes symbol now. I think that is a big improvement.

Oh yea another positive is that this is my 3rd day without any pop/soda whatso ever ( That is my must have BTW).


Question: why is diet pop bad for you...the kinds I like to drink have 0 cals, 0 sugar, 0 caffine????
 
The sugar subtitutes in diet sodas have been known to stimulate your appetite..

If that's a picture of you in your profile, you have the cutest face :)

Ok, so I have a slight issue.

I eat my lunch which is a garden salad (big) and I find my self hungry not long after. Lunch is only 87 cals total so should I add some protien like tuna or chicken into my salad...what's going to help me feel full until my P.M. snack?????
 
absolutely add some protein to it.. 87 calories would barely keep a bird alive... you don't want to starve yourself.. you want to eat sensibly - don' deprive.. just go for healthy options...

Tuna/Chicken (thoughI'm not a fan of canned chicken) or even beans (which have protein and lots of fiber) would be a good option
 
ok,

I think for today, I'll add a fruit to lunch

and then for snack I have whole wheat crackers with tuna on top.


Oh, on the way home from the doctors I had a "light bulb" moment.

My son was extremely well behaved and my plan was to reward him with a slushie (packed full of sugar) from mac's store and then I was like...why would I consider that a reward??? It's not healthy and will only contribute to a bad food relationship ideas in my son's mind. I know my parents did this and that is why I equate success or something positive with eating food or sweets.

Instead, I came home and read a book with him and we will be going for a special trip to the paddleing pool as a reward. I was like YES!!!!! this is the way it should be!

My thoughts are still revolving around when is the next time I get to eat and what. I'm still living to eat, but atleast it's healthy food now.

I've been very tempted to get on the scale but I am resisting so far. I honestly don't want this to revolve around a number. I want this to be about health and lifestyle.

I'm trying really hard to get motivated to get intentional exercise. There are no excuses why I can't get a walk in becasue I live right next to a field. I just need to get off my butt and the comp to do it.
 
that's fabulous!!! congrats... In a bunch of reading I've done.. that's one of the crucial things for parents to do - not use food as a reward (it's ok for puppies, but not for peoples)
 
Oh Miss K you are doing GREAT!! (and yes, your picture IS adorable and it makes me want to put a pic up too, it's nice having visuals to go with names!)

Aren't those light bulb moments great? What a terrific idea to read a book and go to the paddling pool! Good thinking!
