Recently, I participated in a "Biggest Loser" type competition where all contestants paid $50 to enter and, after 8 weeks, the person who lost the most weight got the money as a prize. I ended up winning and I lost 26 lbs. Let me know if you think this would be a good method for you to lose weight.

Another note. Each week we had a weighin and if you didn't lose weight that week you had to pay $5 to the pot. Very motivating to compete and win money.

I did that a few years ago. I chose the Atkins diet plan and lost 30lbs in three months. I lost by 0.1% to someone who also did Atkins.

I lost another 12 lbs over another two months and then lost focus and gained 24lbs back.

For me, a competition for money doesn't give the motivation needed, because once the contest is over, the reason is no longer there.

It's better to make it personal.

What if you could always be competing to stay fit? Isn't that what professional athletes are doing? They train hard to win (not always for money). For the average person there isn't much opportunity to compete physically. You have to join a sports team or run in races. (which is what I trained for while I lost my weight -- I ran my first 1/2 marathon). After you've competed enough times to lose weight you would start to form habits. I wouldn't recommend extreme dieting during the competition because that would be hard to keep up for an extended period. I've started another competition this week with a $25 entry fee and it will be for 13 weeks instead of 8. I don't plan to lose at the same rate I did before and I'm not really shooting to win but I will definitely have a good showing and keep others motivated. By the end of the competition I should be to my goal weight and I plan to start a running or weight training competition.

There's a lot to say about this method. You have accountability, positive peer pressure (we all encourage others and cheer when they do well). A constant reminder to be healthy and pride in doing your best.

I know a family that put together a "Biggest Loser" competition. They all paid in $25 or $50 (I can't remember exactly). They selected the winner based on percentages and not actual weight. They even went a step further though and gave points for the most fat lost and the most muscle gained.

So they looked at several angles of it... not just the scale. It worked well for the family, but once the contest was over... most gained the weight back.

Competition works very well for some folks and not for others. If it works for you... excellent :) It works well for me too. If I had a lot of fat to lose, I'd pay up to $100 to be in a great contest. It makes it more interesting for me!
