College Weight Loss

Hey!
So I know this is super generic, maybe too generic to even be answerable. But I'm a college student weighing in at 200 lbs. (I'm only 5'6" so the height off-set doesn't really compensate.) The weight has really started to because an issue and an area of insecurity and concern for my health so ideally, I think I'd like to ultimately drop at least 40 lbs. I had thought about weight loss supplements but honestly, I'm against them and know I just need to put more of an effort into losing the weight healthily. I guess I'm just looking for advice as to how to get started. I know I really need to sit down and put myself on some form of eating and exercising schedule, so I'd appreciate input on that, or any other tips you may have. I just feel like I'm drowning and it's only going to get worse if I don't do something about it now.
Thanks so much for the help!

Hi and welcome.

Here are my suggestions for getting started.

The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is checking out the various sticky posts in the exercise area of the forum (Weight Loss Through Exercise - Weight Loss Forum). There are some very good posts on exercise, both cardio/aerobic and on incorporating weight lifting into your exercise plans.

I'd also suggest starting a diary in the weight loss diary area (Weight Loss Diary - Weight Loss Forum) as well as reading and participating in other diaries. This is a good way to make updates to your progress and to get support from others. It helps to find the diaries of people who have successfully lost weight (or are losing weight) and reading through them as well. Following the diaries of those who have been successful is both inspiring and informative.

Finally, I'd say you should read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hey Christina :)

I'm also in college and trying to lose weight, so I can relate. It can be hard to find time to exercise, and being on campus probably isn't the ideal environment for healthy eating.

Basically I would say to start a diary in the "Weight Loss Diary" section that way you can visually see what you're doing wrong. That really helped me to see what I could improve in my diet and also get motivation from others. And maybe you could join the gym on your campus because it's probably cheaper than getting a membership elsewhere (for example I pay $10 a month, I know some people who pay around $50/month yikes) so we do have an advantage there.

Oh, and it's good that you are not looking to try diet pills - IMO they're an ultimate waste of time and money.

Hey to all who commented. I am also a college student who is trying to lose weight. I have tried walking, cutting out junk food, cutting out soda and it just wasn't working. I then found this company who is very helpful in getting people to lose weight. If you buy the basic product, you get protein shakes that taste like milkshakes and a body cleanse (that actually tastes good) All you need is to mix with water. Anyway, you will get an app for your phone that is run by Chris and Heidi Powell. They give you a meal schedule, many possible meals to make, recipes for those meals and a grocery list so that you know what to buy to make the meals. After 2 weeks I lost 13 pounds. You will eventually find yourself less hungry throughout the day. You will have to exercise though, whether it be weight resistance or just walking for 20 or 30 minutes. Just a suggestion but I like it
