College Guy is Going to Change his Life

Hey everyone,

I was hoping I'd be able to find a forum like this - I just got back from college for the summer and I'm ready to really change my life. Just a brief intro:

Age 1-10: Super skinny, to the point my ribs would stick out, and I hardly ate. Not sure why, just didn't wanna stop moving long enough to eat, lol, I was super active and hyper.

Age 11: Began to get fat - but that's normal, it was time to put on the extra body weight so I could hit 15% critical body fat to enter puberty (read: I study Nutrition Science). This was really the beginning of the end with my weight.

Age 12-15 - Literally fat, probably a BMI of around 28ish if I had to guess. Began going through puberty and putting on lean body mass, but not as much as I should have.

Age 16-19 - Began to slim down, but still overweight.

Age 20: This is me now, I weigh around 185 pounds and I'm about 6 foot tall. This puts me in the overweight category, though not by much. Problem is, it's all fat. I don't exercise at all, and I think last time I checked my body fat was around 29%. It's quite visable that I'm overweight - I have a double chin and a gut. Main problems include my love of dessert and gourmet, rich food, my love of soda, and the fact that I refuse to drink water.

------------

So that's where I am - and I'm going to change it. I've definately trying dieting before, but I know now from studying nutrition how horrible that is, and I simply need to modify my intake. Exercise is really the big thing now - I've bought an exercise DVD and I have some weights now. I have approximately 3 months to get to where I want to be in time for next year:

Goal:
Weight: 165 pounds (BMI would be 22, right in the middle of "healthy weight")
Body fat: 15%
Extra: I want to be able to take my shirt off without being embarrased, I want my belly button to be visable without my stomach hanging over it, I wasnt to have a defined chin that doesn't just look like fat going around my face.

-----------------------------------------

Plan:
Exercise DVD - Daily
Lifting Weights - Daily (diff muscles though)
Diet: No more soda, I will slowly phase water into my diet as I phase out other drinks. No more high fat desserts (donuts, cheesecake, ice cream) and no more gourmet food with 10g of Sat. Fat per serving. I will not limit food or count calories, just make better choices from now on.

------------------------------------------

I think I can do this - but I'm going to need to come here for encouragement. Thank you guys. You know, these are the best years of my life - I'm in college, I'm young...this is the time when I should be able to take my shirt off and girls swoon, not be disgusted. I really need to do this now.

Hey

Im pretty new around these parts too, but I think you should totally go for it. Cutting out soda is a great idea, I did nutrition too and it was like a mortal sin to drink that stuff, so much sugar and empty calories its shocking how many you can drink and how it adds up.

Work out dvds rock in my opinion, when i was working out at home I managed to lose like 40lbs just doing 2 different dvds on different days, i never lost that much hitting the gym ever. I just discovered the power of weight training and got a kettlebell, i havent used it yet so good luck with your weights ill need it with mine lol.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan there, water is soooo good for you! Have you tried drinking things like crystal light? Its better for you than soda and other drinks but with only a few calories. You can also buy low calorie gatorade and things like that now =) Goodluck to you!

Thanks for all the support you guys! I technically haven't started yet because I decided I'd begin cutting out the soda/eating better etc when my workout DVD arrives in the mail, haha. If it doesn't make it before Saturday I'll get Sunday AND Monday off thanks to Memorial Day - how horrible do I sound? lol

The low calorie drinks might be a good idea, I can't imagine me drinking straight water honestly..it's just so gross!

Plump and Jeannie - wow! Congrats! That's def. some awsome motivation for me.
