hey guys,

soo ... im new here and and honestly no clue where to start. so if im doing it wrong tell me.
as a software developer im part of a large tech forum where i go for tech advice so i thought why not go to a weight loss forum for weight loss advice.
im 25 now and right now at my max weight ever: 135kg (298 pounds)

i have been kinda fat my whole life but it got worse when i started working 9-10 hours aday.

i wouldnt say im eating too much but i guess im eating the wrong stuff at the wrong time? well i eat next to nothing all day and then when i finally get home i eat a healthy meal and then ice cream or something equaly bad way too late in the night.
the past 2 weeks i was kinda sick and used that to consum no sugar whatsoever and i didnt eat much overall and i gained 4 freaking pounds.
my guess is that i just have a really freaking low burn rate because my "workout" is virtually non-existent.

soo anyways now im really freaking out and thought maybe other peoples advice couldnt hurt.
i used too run in the morning but have no time for that now and havent gotten myself to running in the evening yet but thats still my plan right now: go running and cut down on sugar and carbs and i hope itll be fine.

ill be happy to read your opinions and ill report (weekly i guess?) back with my progress.
ultimatively i want to at least reach under 100kg (220pounds)

Hi Genius and welcome to the forum!

Some people do gain weight on not enough food but it´s really rare and something a doctor should look at. Most of us are just unaware of how many calories we´re putting away. So... anyways I´d suggest you keep a food diary for a week, weigh before and afterwards and write down every tiniest sip and bite you consume. There are several apps out there to make that easier for you, by the way. Then afterwards you can see where you are on the amount of fruit&veg you´re consuming, if you´re getting enough protein, maybe too much fat and of course what your calories are doing at the end of the day. Knowing your starting point makes it easier to chart a course for your goal. Plus, of course, it gives you something to show your GP if you do turn out to have a condition that needs checking out.

Best of luck and I look forward to following your progress!

Hey hun, welcome to the forum! I'm 27 so we are close in age :) lots of us use myfitnesspal to log food - it's pretty accurate and quite addictive once you get going!

Hi genius :) & welcome to the WLF forum. Seeing a nutritionist would be a really good idea if you can. There is so much conflicting & confusing info out there about what is & isn't a healthy diet. It would be a good idea to keep a diary of what you eat & when, & as Hana said a lot of use My Fitness Pal. Losing weight slowly is the best idea. Try to start your day with a small meal if you can to kick start your metabolism. It's quite possible that you are not eating enough.

soo i was about to register for myfitnesspal when i noticed. did you read the licence agreement on that thing? its really horrific, private data wise. they collect all of that data. but generally i think logging food is a good idea ill look for an alternative

Hi and welcome....
Your just not going to get away from sites logging anything you do. Even the mega sites like Google log every site you visit as well as when what type of device your using. Things like deleting search history or any other privacy issues are just deleted off you phone. Still logged on their servers for them to use in the future however they see fit.
Welcome to the digital age.......

I make use of the PC version of calorie king food tracking app, as it is a stand alone there are far less privacy issues, it is not well supported for updates but you can add your own food to the database and I do not need to share my data with the online version if I don't want to.

or

as a software developer if you do not eat a wide variety of different foods it should be fairly quick/easy to put together your own database for tracking.

posting your daily consumption and exercise here would also give us the opportunity to get a better idea of where you are going wrong and make valid suggestions. If we have no data to work from then all anybody is doing is making an uninformed guess.

ok so this what im trying right now:
warrior/low carb diat
basically i used to eat once a day anyway so this works really well for me.
so once a day when i get home from work i have a big meal consisting only of chicken and vegetables. so far this works great for me im not hungry at all.
so last week alone i lost 5 kg doing this with no added sport.
then of course i gained 3kg back on the weekend when i was supposed to to do high carb to keep burn rate high but i hope thats gonna go back down this week and im still planning on adding running seasons in the evening.
im pretty sure im still doing lots of stuff wrong but right now im really invested and will change stuff to see what works and what doesnt.
also this low carb thing is making me really happy half the time and making me wanna kill myself the other half. i never realized how addicted to sugar i am.
last wednesday i could have knocked somebody out for a piece of freaking cake or something. its a weird feeling where im not hungry at all but theres this heavy lust for something sweet, anything, one freaking spoon of ice cream. but no at the end of the day im always really happy i stayed strong and didnt give in.
yeah soo... thats basically the update on my situation right now...counting calories like some of you suggested sadly didnt really work for me but i feel like if i keep my diat as strict as it is now i dont need to.

It takes time to adapt to low carb, so each time you have a high carb day you are setting your adaption period back to zero, once adapted most of the cravings will go away.

the 3 kg will be from fluid retention due to the high carb hit.

While on low carb exercise performance will be reduce for a while while the body adapts then performance levels will recover. if you want to use the method of targeting additional carb intake for exercise it is best done after you have adapted to low carb and the additional carbs should be minimal.

While low carb, keeping your electrolyte levels up is also important, this includes specifically salt and magnesium.

for reference, I eat to a 50 gram carb limit each day, but am unable to fast (1 meal per day) at the moment due to pregnancy. when not pregnant my carb limit is 20 grams. I do not count calories.

interesting... soo are you saying i should not high carb at all because it resets adaption? or am i misunderstanding that?

pretty much, there are 3 common ways to tackle low carb and exercise. The first is low carb all the time, this will cause the body to use fat and ketones to power the exercise but takes time to adapt to and you see an initial drop in performance before you see improvements. The next is cyclic where you have a carb up once a week (cheat day) to increase blood glucose levels so exercise performance doesn't drop but you never see the full benefits of low carb and are still going to have cravings for sugar because you never fully adapt. Targeted is when you have just a few extra carbs right before you exercise, this also minimises the performance loss is a good compromise between the 2 but it very easy to have too many carbs before training leading to the same issues as cyclic.

whichever way is chosen it is good to fully adapt to low carb first.

I have done targeted before and had trouble sticking to it, low carb all the time is easier to stay on track and I have had no problems building muscle which is something those not fully familiar with low carb say cannot be done.

puhhh.. what youre saying makes a lot of sense but i dont know if i can give up on carbs completely like that cheat day is the only time i get to have the things i crave maybe i need to read on some low carb recipes. i thought if you low carb all the time your body is gonna turn down your burn rate? and that the cheat day was exactly for that. so it doesnt? im a little confused
