Clicking in my shoulder

When I do certain movements like a bench press type of movement with weight, my shoulders "click", especially on the left side. I can't say it hurts but its a very unpleasant feeling. It prevents me from doing as much as I could do otherwise. What could be causing it and what can I do about it? I don't feel like I'm doing too much weight at all, I'm not even doing as much as I could do if it weren't for the "pops". It really only happens with movement done laying down, with my arms out front. I haven't found that any other movements cause it.

If it's not hurting, I wouldn't worry to much. If you heard my joints when lifting you'd think someone was eating a huge bowl of rice krispies right next to your ear.

My shoulder used to click a lot but it hurt too. It turned out being severe tendinitis and a small tear in one of my rotator cuff muscles.

what if it hurts afterward, but not during? Or starts to get progressively worse and a bit painful? Today seemed worse than other days and now it hurts more on the left (the clicky side) and the right seems fine. I didn't do much because it irritated the crap out of me. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, so sometimes i'm not sure if I'm hurting myself or if its just typical eeryday pain, you know?

I've had clicking in my knees before. I had surgery on my left one (not for the clicking, don't worry!) and when I was doing physical therapy, I asked about it and my therapist said it's because my muscles weren't firing correctly, so I need to strengthen them and train them to align correctly again. If it keeps up or starts hurting, I would say it would be best to ask a trainer, doctor, etc. about it. Then again, I'm only speaking from my experiences.

I'd start by resting it a couple of weeks.

That's always where I start when I'm dealing with pain.

If the pain stays and I don't know how to fix the issue myself, the first place I turn is usually an ART practitioner. My chiro who is certified in ART has saved my ass more times than I can remember. I own him a lot and a good ART practitioner is worth his or her weight in gold plus some.

ART = Active Release Technique = A soft tissue healing form of myofascial release.

Active Release Techniques®.

I rely on him to tell me if he can fix me or if I need to see another kind of doc.

More often that not it's something I can fix on my own. I definitely suggest reading through Eric Cressey's article over at t-nation. It's fantastic and the guy has forgotten more than I'll ever know about prehad and rehab. And he's my age to boot!

I was a pitcher on Babe Ruth and other leagues and I know of that clicking. I feel it and hear it every time I warm up. I think it's pretty normal because I've only had arm troubles once and that was because of my own stupidity (Pitching my hardest without warming up after a long winter off = tendinitis) .

Thanks for the links Steve, those articles were really helpful. I think that when I'm doing the dumbbell bench press, which is what hurts my shoulder the most, my elbows are in the wrong position. I need to fix that. There is a lot of good information in those articles though, I'm going to read through them a few more times.
