What I hate about obesity:
1) I hate how it's still socially acceptable to make fun of fat people, as if we really enjoy our problem.
2) I hate how people come up to you and ask you if you're pregnant, thinking that's such a cute thing to say.
3) I hate how in the name of "free enterprise" we let food companies and pharmaceutical companies rip us off with new chemical ways to get rid of obesity, when all they are doing is perpetuating the obesity yo-yo.
4) I hate all the hucksters out there, like Dr. Phil, who get rich off fat people through selling them special food, instead of educating them to buy healthy food in the grocery store.
5) I hate how under the banner of "no child left behind" we are practically eliminating sports and athletic activity in elementary school, because there's not enough time left to teach our little kids how to take all these &#&*#&# tests -- thus creating a whole new generation of obese children.
6) I hate how commercials on TV promote obesity, without any warnings at all, just as cigarette commercials promoted lung cancer with no warnings 40 years ago ("Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should!).
7) I hate how the fashion industry promotes size zero models, and the anorexia and bulimia that goes with it, and especially the effect that has on young adolescent girls.
8) I hate the magazine cover designers, who think it is just fine to Photoshop away pounds to promote an "ideal" that is unattainable.
9) I hate how people presume it is just a matter of will power to lose weight.
10) I hate it when people presume that it does not take will power to lose weight.
11) In other words, I hate it when ultra-simplistic solutions are proposed for our problem. This is a complex issue, involving both personal commitment and society as a whole. Many of us in this forum will succeed, but for every one of us who does, there are a hundred more out there who won't.
