Changing my body shape

I have always been a little self conscious about my body proportions - I'm 6'4" and weigh around 174lb, which means I'm tall and lanky.

I want to begin to focus more on my body - I have almost completed an epic uni degree, and know I've been neglecting my fitness. I've also turned 24 and want to make the most of my youth...I don't necessarily want to be a hulk, my first goal is to bulk up and obtain "normal" proportions ie loose the lanky label. What sort of commitment is needed to see consistent results? Do I have to become a fitness fanatic to see real results? It annoys me that I am more active than a lot of my friends but I look so much weaker with this lankey stick figure!!! I think if I knew where I was heading I wouldn't get so frustrated with myself.

If I do weight training 3 times a week for about an hour and STICK TO IT consistently is that enough? I also know that I have to push myself to eat more...some advice would be greatly appreciated.

It doesnt look like you need any advice.
yeah, 3times a week would be enough. 1 hour workouts (1hour weight lifting, not including warmup, cooldown and any cardio you want to do).

look at http://www.fitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9146
to see what we all eat.

you should research on a 3day split workout, pull/push/legs+core. if you dont understand, ask.

search the website for protien, meal plans etc...

use www.exrx.com to find any exercises you dont understand and help plan your workout.

As time goes by....

Its sometimes funny looking back on past posts....I weigh 205 lb now and not quite as lanky as i once was! Of course there is always the next set of goals to chase after. Being a little older now I realise that my boyish lankiness wasn't something to be ashamed of. Your male physique changes as you get older and you should embrace each stage. Ah well you live and you learn!

1HR 3 TIMES A WEEK IS HEEPS! this is a good start. you just have to eat a lil more since your using more energy up during the day cause if you eat to much you will be putting on fat not muscle
eat 5 times a day
train heavy 10 reps 4 sets
protein shake after gym only
chest triceps, back and biceps and shoulder and legs... train individually each day

R.Lewis gave you some good advice. This is a good, simple workout which you can do ~3 times per week. Supplement that with a 2500-3000 calorie diet (depending on your activity) and something like a 30-30-40 (protein, fat, carb percentages) diet. And you'll gain weight in no time.

Yes Swolemike- R. Lewis did give me some good advice even though it was almost six years ago! I feel like my training has only started to come together this past year...Which coincides with be joining a gym as opposed to working out at home - go figure.

A trainer at my gym has recently switched me from a split routine to a total body work out. 4 Compound movements with an isolated superset for bicept/triceps.

Throwing deadlifts in with all those other exercises I find really challenging...hopefully i will see results soon, my body is steel reeling although its getting easier!

Hello! I think most people have similar feelings. Even the the big muscle heads believe it or not. The reasons seem to be on different levels for everyone, One person might be concerned that there muscles are to big, another too small. I strongly beleive you can natureally get the body you want without the stress, money, and time that so many poeple put into this topic. Truthfully, you only need about 24 Minutes a day to BULK UP. The biggest reason for this is because it's easy to over exert the body. Muscle grows when your resting, and needs to intake and adjust the proper chemical loss and gain, for sculpting the body.
