Changing body

I am new here but have a question for anyone who will answer! Has anyone actually transformed their body through weight training. What I mean is has anyone ever been quite a bit overweight (underarm flab that actually hangs down, a lot of extra fat on thighs and hips) and then made their body firm and tone. I have yo-yo dieted so many times and had bullemia 9 years ago and my body is paying for it now! I have extra fat in weird places for a 28 year old. My arms look like I should be in a nursing home. I am doing HIIT 3 days a week now and resistance training 3 days a week for 60 minutes a day. My tape is pretty good, it has a lot of lunges and squats, ect for lower and also an upper and abs portion. I have been using 10 pound weights for certain exercises and 5 pounds for other arm ones. Is that actually even considered weight training? I have pretty big legs, I am short only 5'4'' and it seems as though most of my weight is in the top of my legs. I do not want them to get bigger and the fat not go away!! I dont even know if that is possible I just had someone tell me that I should not be doing squats and lunges because it would make the muscle in my legs get bigger and replace the fat and would in return stay the same size only muscle. I dont believe them but thought I would type that anyhow!! So if anyone reads this and has any help or ideas please tell me!! I appreciate it.

If you're losing weight, you can't bulk up your legs by doing squats and lunges. In fact because you're a yo-yo dieter I would say your muscle mass under your fat is a good percentage less than someone who's been straight overweight into adulthood.

With that said, weight training and body weight exercises should be your focus so you conserve muscle as you diet. What are your sets and reps like? Is the last rep in a set challenging for you to achieve?

well, actually I do a tape by minna lessig and each exercise is one minute then on to the next. I do 24 minutes and sometimes she repeats some more than once. She does a heck of a lot of various squats and lunges though. Each night before bed I do 3 sets of 15 squats with a 10-lb dumbell in each hand and 3 sets of reverse lunges with the same weight. I do have a muscle right above my knee on the outer part of my leg that is getting pretty noticable and firm. That is what freaked one of my friend out and she said my legs were gonna stay the same size and turn to muscle. I just laughed! Thanks for answering.

Well, I am 18 years old and I used to be quite abit overweight (not obese though). I didn't actually do any weight training while I was losing weight, essentially what I did was allow for my exercise to build the muscle for me. I did ALOT of running, coupled with some cycling and swimming. Nowadays, I don't need to think about the weight loss aspect at all, but I still run lots (30M/week min) because it just feels so good. I also now do pressups in the mornings and evenings and found this to be the best way to keep the body I want. The running keeps my stomach tight and general body fat down, and the pressups are really helping to maintain some upper body muscle.

I guess it really depends what you want from your body. I've probably commited a exercise sin writing these down in some way (I can't keep up with all this stuff) but I just thought I'd tell you what worked for me.
