Carrie's at "SQUARE ONE"

You are right to keep at it. We have all abandoned projects and it is so sad when that happens.

I am pleased to see that you are getting out and walking. Do not underestimate the value of walking at your own pace. It really makes a major contribution to weightloss. Every morning when I get out of the house on my walk I surprise myself because I know that if I get out of the house and a little way down the road I will complete the walk which will be good exercise. I know that if I get out I will do at least 6 miles. As Kimberly said - getting out is the hardest bit.

And since you mention looking for a man - I can add that you are more likely to meet someone if you are out walking than if you are sitting in watching the television. There can be lots of benefits to going out walking. I am a mature and very married lady - but I was approached by several men last spring / summer when I was out walking and asked if I was single!!!

For me, the hardest part about exercising is getting out there--especially with walking. Once I'm out doing it, I am fine. Do you feel that way, too? What about when you're done? Do you feel great, like you did something good, like your body got some good exercise?

You are so right, Kimberly, it is DEFINITELY physically making myself get off the couch and go. Once I get about 5 minutes into the walk/workout, I still don't feel like doing it, but the initial loathing is gone LOL..

I don't feel great when I'm done, mostly because the exercise I've been doing lately (about 40 mins of walking) feels so minimal, it only burns like...160 calories? (big whoop, I just burned off my bowl of cereal) But that always seems to be my problem, jumping ahead too much, trying to do too much too soon, and then becoming very frustrated when I just can't.

You were asked because you're all hot now! LOL. I'm very very very not. But I will continue with the walking...maybe someday!

Today was not too bad, I'm feeling extremely hungry, even though I had a humongous lunch...but I'm hanging in there! Hope everyone is having a good day!

8am
hardboiled egg
coffee (with that awful coffee mate powder)

12pm

3 pieces toast (50 cals each slice)...1 tsp butter
1 leg, 1 thigh bbq chicken

8pm
2 pieces broiled chicken
1/2 cup whole wheat pasta
salad, no dressing

No wonder you're hungry! According to my calculations, you only ate about 1,000 calories. Go eat girl!! That is far too low.

As to you only burning 160cals on a 40min walk--that is not true. The more you weigh, the more you burn. My calculations have you burning about 300calories on that walk--depending on your pace. Also keep in mind that exercise elevates your metabolism, so you're still burning calories at a higher rate for several hours after your walk. Oh, yeah, and then there's the improved fitness that exercise provides--improving your overall heath. :)

As to you picking up men on your walks, I agree with Margaret. And don't be so down on your looks. There are plenty of men out there who will find you attractive at your current weight. If only skinny women found men, the world would not be suffering from overpopulation. :D Keep in mind that 300lb men do not expect their gf to be a skinny minnie. Also, there are plenty of thin men who like chubby women. My gf has always been heavy--a similar bmi to yours--and her H is a stick. She has not gained or lost any weight since they met, and he obviously finds her attractive or he wouldn't have married her. :)

I agree with bikinibound... looks like you should be eating more, especially with the added exercise or you're going to be in danger of losing weight in the form of muscle loss. Do you use FitDay at all? I highly recommend it. It provides a tonne of great info about your diet. Daily numbers, weekly/biweekly/monthly averages (calories and macros), etc. It's default database sucks it pretty hard but the time you invest into popping your own numbers into it is SO worth it.

You missed the timeframe element of my posting. I said that it happened last spring / summer. At the end of February last year I weighed 294 pounds (check my ticker start for BMI). By the end of August I was down to a trim not much over 210 pounds. I repeat during spring / summer LAST year four different men tried to pick me up when I was out walking. In fact - one quite phased me by turning up a number of times. I really was not used to that kind of attention!

I decided that this area had suddenly been over-ran with chubby-chasers!

The fact was that I was out of the house and walking along. The weather was quite pleasant so I was smiling. You are certainly not going to meet anyone sitting in and watching television.

LOL! Hi guys!!! No worries, I did not fall off the wagon...I'm still kicking! I have been super busy with work this week, but I have increased my calories to 1300-1400 a day (According to fit day) I've continued walking 40 minutes a day, all week except yesterday. So I'm doing ok. A little concerned that I'm only down 0.5 this week...maybe my body is still getting adjusted to actually getting some nutrition? LOL

Anyhoo, there's something else that's been bothering me. I have some dark areas on my neck, elbows and knees, and it won't go away with scrubbing. In doing some research, I came across a condition called "polycistic ovarian syndrome". I'll bring this up to my doctor next time I talk to him, but I match about 1/2 of the symptoms. Anyone know anything about this? Alternately, does anyone else have these dark spots and could they be related to my weight?

Hmm. I have PCOS, and it does lead to discolorations, but usually they're limited to armpit and groin areas--though I suppose it's possible they could appear elsewhere? I'm not entirely clear on the mechanism that causes the discoloration. As for the PCOS, it can be diagnosed with relative certainty with a few easy blood tests and confirmation of your symptoms. It's a bit of a bitch, but it doesn't mean you can't lose weight and make yourself healthier!

And don't worry. Small progress is still progress, and as long as you keep working at it and moving along, everything's good.

Sophie

Margaret also has PCOS. I hope that you don't, as it certainly doesn't sound like much fun. You should definitely go to the doc to make sure. Losing weight will help alleviate some of the symptoms, I've heard--but PCOS does tend to make it harder to lose weight--kind of a double edged sword.

I would aim for those calories to be between 1500-1700. 1300 is still too low--especially when your bmr is probably about 2600 cals. There is no need to cut your calories in more than half this early in the game. It gives you no where to go once you get closer to your goal.

Hi Carrie :D
Is the skin on your knees and elbows dry or leathery? That could be causing it in those areas. If so, I recommend Aquaphor ointment...its super great for dry skin.

The doctor can send you for an ultrasound scan to check out your ovaries. PCOS girls have a lovely little array of cysts that they say looks like a pearl necklace. In all honesty they were pretty sure that I was PCOS before the scan when they saw how hairy I am.

You really will save yourself a whole heap of problems if you manage to lose weight if you are a PCOS girl as it can bring some definite health risks and also some highly unpleasant consequences.

Janice (Abbagirl) and I both swear that lots and lots of walking is beneficial for PCOS girls.

If one of your problems is that you are hairy - take my advice and get lasered when you are young. Most laser treatments work reasonably well on dark hair - but dont work at all on white hair. It means that after quite a lot of laser sessions I have quite a lot of white hairs and I have to go to a specialist place to get them done. There really are not many places that deal with them and then it is uncertain whether it will work.

Someone made a great posting about losing weight for PCOS girls and I thought that it was so good - I edited page 1 of my diary to quote it so that I could easily refer to it.

So I talked to my doc about PCOS, and I don't seem to have it, according to my tests, which is a good thing! I'm hanging in there with my weight loss, only down about 2 pounds in two weeks. Just want to thank everyone for their support, and I promise to be around more soon!

That's great news about the PCOS!

I think it's great that you've managed to lose 2lbs in two weeks. Often when you do a calorie increase, it puts a temporary halt to the weight loss. The fact that you're still losing means you upped your cals before they did any major damage to your metabolism. :)

Slow and steady wins the race--just remember that. :grouphug:

Two lbs is good. The slow, steady weightloss is what's likely to stay off over the long haul, and that's what we're aiming for. :)

Sophie

It is definitely great news that you do not have PCOS.

Two pounds down in two weeks is an achievement. Think about what two pounds of butter looks like. It is quite a lot of fat.

Just calling by to say that I hope that everything is going well for you.

Take care
Love
Margaret
