cardio vs lifting weights

I am confused on what I should be doing more of. Cardio or strength training and resistant training? I want to burn fat and tone at the same time. Any advice is more than welcomed. Thank you!

More cardio then weight training. for weights a good base would be full body 3 days per week but cardio should be done most days unless it is high intensity.

weight training doesn't have to be pumping iron, it also include bodyweight exercises or using resistance bands.

I dont know what you would consider cardio being intense. I am doin 5-6 days of working out and my cardio is everyday for an hour and a half. Normally on the treadmill or bike. When I do the treadmill i put the incline on 10 or 11 and the speed on 3-4. So would this be considered intense? I do resistance training and I also life weights everyday I work out as well.

sounds like your cardio is ok, is your lifting routine split into body parts ? if it is not and you doing a full body workout 5-6 days per week the I would suggest that your intensity isn't high enough on the weights, if you finish your planned sets and reps in an exercise with enough energy left to do more reps then your weights are not high enough.

lifting light weights help endurance but are pointless for any other goal.

let me know if you need set and rep ranges for different goals.

cardio intensity is different for everybody, if at the end of the workout you feel that you couldn't take another step then that would be intense.

Best method is using the RPE (Rating of perceived exertion), ie a number between 1-10. 1 sitting on your ass, 10 means almost, dead hard out. The higher number you work the more calories you are going to burn, but ideally you want something you can sustain for some period so you can burn more. Anything 5-9 is good, go with what you feel like on the day. ie having a stressed/bad day raises your cortisol, so doing an extreme workout may make you feel worse rather than better, so take it easy. On the other hand if you go in amped, and feel like working hard, go for it, The harder you work the more you burn.
Any exercise will burn calories or fat, any weight exercises will create muscle with burns fat, just make sure you get a couple days break a week to rest, and try not to work the same muscles on weights without a couple days break between them :)

So...for me its very hard with my workouts because I work nights and I know they say its best to work out first thing when you wake up but when I wake up its already afternoon time. So after I sleep for about 4 hours I get up and go to the gym. I feel like I am doing a lot of cardio but I know that cardio is important. I think to challenge my cardio routine I should increase the speed on the treadmill and for my weight lifting maybe I should do more weight because Im not feeling the burn after I am done lifting weights. Also add more sets and reps? I normally try to do certain parts of the body on different days. Can someone tell me more about sit ups because I am doing them everyday and im noticing that my upper abs are getting smaller but not my lower. How can I fix this? Thanks for all the help and advice guys!

abs are like any other muscle, they shouldn't be worked every day, also rather than doing heaps of sit up make the situps harder or add in some variety with different ab exercises.

you are not going to be able to spot reduce the fat over your lower abs to see definition there you need to work towards a very low bodyfat%

you say you want the toned look so I you should be looking at 2-3 sets of 8 rep for each exercise, if you can do more reps increase the weight, lifting heavy will not make you huge but it will help you maintain your existing muscle while you cut the fat and you will get stronger and improve your muscle definition. if you have the time try for 2-3 different exercises per muscle.
