Cardio, Stamina??

Hi all, I recently got into the gym. I did heavy physical work for many years and have been driving for 10 now. I notice that I have very little stamina when it comes to cardio work. I am now using a bike at the gym as I have bad knees and can't take impact. Should I switch to the elliptical, or even the treadmill to build myself up. I can only handle 10-15 minutes of it now. I am not overweight, 44 years old, a smoker for 25,,I know I know, the smoking is the worst, I have it in my mind now that it's either me or the butts, I choose me. Wish me luck

Any help would be great

Thanks Tony

Just keep plugging. Tell yourself everytime you do your cardio that Im going 15 minutes and I'm not going to stop no matter what. Get stubborn with yourself. Bike, elliptical trainer, treadmill, no matter right now. Go 2 weeks at 15, then up it 5 minutes every 2 weeks until your up to 40 to an hour. When it gets too easy for you, switch it up. As your stamina increases, do multiple machines in a session. Your on the right track, just keep it up :). With knee problems though, your best bet is going to be the bike, elliptical , or swimming.

Ok Please Help Me Please

Hi new to the site so I could use the helpI dont know how to post a new topic! Ok my problem is this freshman year of college football I tore my MCL i have about an 1/4 inch tear in it and it has disabled me from running full speed and making any cuts and pretty much from running. I was an EXTREMLY athletic person untill about 3 years ago when that happened. I never had the surgery that the doctors said i needed and that ended my carrer in sports period. I am deathly afraid of needles and thats y i never got it fixed. OK main point is now i am 5'10 220 and i am starting to look kind of bulky and most of the weight in my stomach. I NEED to start cardio and also i want to be about 165-185 range but with a flat stomach again.. and yes i know what I have to do which is cardi, but do you think its ok to do like on the elliptical machine.? I tried to jog and i find it KILLS my knee and eventually it will go out and i am limping severly for about 3-4 days. is there anything that can be done without surgery to help fix my knee? i hope someone will respond to me soon! thanks so much!- brandon

First off to make a new post you click new thread in the upper left corner of the forum window (not in a post) Second see your physician and ask him if there is anything else you can do. You can try the eliptical, or swimming may even be good for you. Correct me if Im wrong but the MCL is in the knee, right? Pick up a knee brace. they sell some pretty hefty ones that really support great. I know from riding motocross when I hurt my knee these can be a life saver. And last Personally I dont think anyone "likes" the idea of surgery or needles or anything. but just think about the long run. if you dont get it fixed it could just possible get worse, or basicly conflict with the rest of your life. you wont be as athletic, may hurt sex life, possible when your older you will end up in a wheelchair due to it. now look at the little surgery you can have now that can really make your life alot better in the long run. I would say go under the knife and just git er done. I would imagine they are going to give you some sedative and you will be sleeping for the whole thing anyways. Look at it like another obstacle in life. you can either hike up and over this mountain of fear you have and ahve a clear path from then on, or take the long rutted out dirt road that only goes downhill. no chance for improvement.. Juse my $.02 Whatever you decide good luck. My friend tore his ACL pretty bad and he had surgery put him out for a few weeks but hes back at it in better shape than ever. I know that I wouldnt let it hold me down. you only get to live once so you gotta make the best of what you can
