cardio fitness & cardio endurance

ok iv a question ive been thinkin about.....

If u train for cardio fitness and people say that HIIT is good for this, and this is done on say a 15-20mins basis...then what does the recommended 45-50mins per day mean most people are training for? I just wanna know what is the definition of cardio fitness v's cardio endurance...? anyone?
who is more cardiov. fit, ...a sprinter or a marathon runner...I know about the difference in muscle endurance etc for these two but not the cardio side...thanks all!
