cardio and weight training on same day?

im concerned about wat ive heard about doing cardio and weight training on the same day...ive heard that cardio on the same day will slow your results...i am doing a full body workout on one day 1 and about 2 hours of cardio on day 2, nothing really intense, ill do basketball and swimming...but on the weight training day, is it still alright to play basketball? should i only do a little or not at all?

i WANT to lose body fat as well as gain muscle at the same time, but i kno that cant be done, so i want to gain muscle first then focus on losing the fat

then do cardio only on your off days. And make sure you are eating over your maintenance level of calories. (500-700 over). You need to have an excess of calories at the end of the day. Doing cardio will only burn them.

I suggest HIIT to minimize muscle loss and no more than 3 times a week

Thats scientifically impossible unless you are extreemly out of shape. Pick one or the other.

Larrabee, please read posts properly before you respond. HalfHeartedGoal clearly stated that they know that can't be done and so want to gain muscle first and then lose fat. I know you're new and enthusiastic to help people but, it only takes a minute to read whats been posted.

My bad, thanks for pointing that out.

Since you seem to be in good condition already, I would recommend a 3x/wk full body, steady state cardio 3x/wk (for 1-2 weeks).

After two week, you can move to HIIT for 2x/wk.

Don't worry about losing muscle. You need to do lots of cardio to seriously affect your muscle gains. One to three miles 3x/wk is not bad. Twenty-five miles a day would be.

Could someone explain exactly why one cannot lose body fat as well as gain muscle at the same time ? I believe it is not only possible but desirable and likely in the early stages of strength training and or body fat reduction. Please post links to any research material that would support or refute the notion that you cannot build muscle and lose fat at the same time.

I am afraid I just don't subscribe to the school of thought that aerobics (cardio) and diet are the most important factors for BF reduction. Perhaps people are trying to directly transfer conditions that are true for elite body builders to beginners and novices.

What I hear is, it is possible in the early stages and/or in obese and overweight people, but once your fat stores get down, you have to start trading off. The body wants to hold on to a certain amount of fat, so when it starts to get lean, the body becomes more resistant to letting go.
