Carbs are useless?

I read in a magazine recently about the guy who trained Hilary Swank for MDB.
He said quite matter-of-factly that 'carbohydrates are not essential to human health'. Surely this is absolute rubbish! However, I am really interested in why he would say this and what his reasoning might be?

Given that certain cultures have survived without grains I do think maybe that grains are not essential. And what about eskimos? They survive on seal blubber....

The body burns carbs, fats, proteins, in that order.

If you want to lose weight, or fat, then a very minimum amount of carbohydrates are needed.

I have to disagree here. Carbs are very important for fat loss.

The body burns glycogen, then taps to fat stores. The ideal macronutrient split for losing fat is 40 percent protein, 40 percent carbs, 20 percent fat. Carb timing is more important than carb limiting. If you eat small meals during the day, spreading the carbs through them, then the carbs don't have time to convert to fat.

He sounds like an atkins bandwagon follower.

Truth is, nothing is set in stone, and fat loss isn't an exact science. Everything works until your body adapts. I don't see any benefit for me to cut carbs however. I do just fine with a 40/40/20 split.

I personally think people overcomplicate these things. It may not be an exact science but it is far from rocket science. With a little knowledge, a lot of commitment and even more hard work everyones goals are attainable.

fact: the average adult needs nearly 100g of carbohydrates per day to maintain healthy brain functions.

the CTO where I work has been doing the hardcore, phase1, almost 0 carb Atkins thing for over a year now...18 months probably. He's head developer...and since he started Atkins, our software has had more goofy, senseless bugs appear than prior to his carb-starving.
