Hello. Im 16, almost exactly 6 foot and 210 pounds ): .... Heavy built and family has history of low metabolisms

I have some major fat coming off my body and I am feeling irritated that i won't be able to make any sports teams. I have tried the gym consistently for a while and saw no weight loss. Thirty minutes walking on tread mill and thirty on weight machines. I have seen a few of my friends absolutely transformed from sports conditioning. I have never used free weights, is there any difference between the machines and the free weights? If there is, what would be a good workout that would give results for someone like me? Does cardio do that much, as in tread mill or sit ups? What would be a good daily schedual? Also I eat school lunches, which are usually not so healthy. What is smart choices that would help weight loss? I am not that worried about muscles yet because the fat is the real problem right now, not only with frustration but with potential health risks. I know I am giving a question overload, but I hope you guys can give some good suggestions. Thanks.
