Can you do HIIT plus a little Extra cardio?

So I'm not entirely new to weight lifting. In that I use free weights, I know what kind of lifts work specific muscles. (I.e. military press works the shoulders and back, bench press chest and triceps)

But that's about where it stops. So I picked up "body for life" the other day and I have decided to incorporate this methodology for weight lifting. The book states that you are to do 20 minutes of HIIT 3x a week and approx. 45min of weights 3x a week at High intensity. It says not to do anything more than this because it will limit recovery time.

I was hoping to be able to jog/walk with my dogs in the mornings and do my HIIT or Weight training at night. Several people are telling me that this will effect my recovery period negatively in that it is too much and I will start burning muscle.

I read SOMEWHERE on here a link to Alwyn Cosgrove's website where he Broke down the priority of working out based on amount of time a person has to spend in the Gym. Basically he said that if you have 6hrs to spend in the gym then you can Do intense weight training, HIIT, and Interval Aerobic Training. Well that's me.

I figured jogging/walking my dogs would fall under the Aerobic interval training. However, come up with something else for their exercise if anyone here thinks it will negatively effect the recovery time, fat loss, and muscle building my body experiences from this. I want to maximize the muscle building and fat loss my body experiences. I figured the walking my dogs would increase the amount of glycogen burned and there by slightly increase fat loss. Would doing this have more of a negative effect, positive or neutral based on my Goals.

PS
I'm Female
5'4"
151 lbs
33% body fat (according to bathroom scale)

Thanks everyone

Hey...

In all honesty, the quality of your diet will probably have the biggest effect on whether you're in an anabolic or cathabolic state.

If you're exercising frequently and eating well, don't sweat the detail and just enjoy what you do - unless you want to compete seriously in sports.

as a guide, don't train hard more than 1 hour a day - if you do that you can do pretty much whatever you want in that period.

Hope that helps :sport:

It might effect your recovery. Just be careful not to overtrain. If you're doing HIIT 3x a week and weight training, I wouldn't do any more cardio than that. If you still want to run/jog, then cut HIIT down to once or twice a week.

I agree with this, and on top of this if your your worried about muscle loss make sure ya keep your protein level high enough and diet in check or muscle depletion can occur, especially if you end up overtrainin a bit due to other cardio activities.
