Can I lose weight & build muscle at the same time?

Hi Guys

I would like to lose about 20 kgs and also build up muscle at the same time, is this possible or should I lose the weight then work on the muscle building?

Also, regarding diet, I usually have bran flakes & skimmed milk for breakfast, baked potato & low fat beans for lunch and something like grilled chicken/fish & veg for dinner. Snacks, fruit, low fat yogurt, smoothie and plenty of water.

How does this sound?

Thanks

In general, no.

However, 20kg is 45lbs or so, so it's possible if you are:

1. New to lifting.
2. Obese.

However, you'll get quicker results cutting first, then building.

Agreed, cut with something like The New Rules of Lifting FL I-III or also MH's Home grown muscle phase I.

isn't it true that for bodybuilders or ppl like that losing fat while gaining muscle is nearly impossible, but for the average overweight person small losses/gains in fat and muscle are possible? just nothing extreme?

Yes. Once you get leaner, I'd say around 15% or less, the body is more resistant to giving up it's fat stores.

does carb cyling aim to balance the best of both? it sounds as if you eat more muscle food on weight training days and less on cardio days.

Carbs are the energy source for the body, so it makes sense to feed it well on days when you will put the most stress on it. Carbs also drive the insulin production and insulin moves nutrients to active tissue and fat stores. By reducing carbs on days where you put less stress on the body it has the side effect of causing the body to use stored fat to feed itself and at the same time prevent adaptation to a lower energy intake because you don't stay at that level all the time.

if you mix cardio with your weight lifting, with a calorie deficit and eating well

then yes, you will be losing weight, because your getting rid of the bad fat stored in ur seeing the meaning of what it takes to be fit

its a lifelong journey. good luck!
