Hi - I've joined this in the hope of getting some advice for my mum. She suffers from multiple sclerosis and has poor use of her legs. Exercise makes her very tired out and increasing exercise above her daily existance is not possible I dont think. She very cleverly and at long long last gave up smoking almost 5 months ago now much to my delight, but the weight has piled on. She eats quite sensibly, munches on carrot pieces and the like when she needs to and lives on sugar free chewing gum to help avoid the craving to smoke. She has been under her doctor for 8 weeks now on reductil to try and help her lose weight but she is staying stable, not losing though thankfully not gaining either. She is getting very very depressed about not dropping her weight despite a lot of effort from her. She says the drug did nothing to help reduce her appetite - she was prescribed something new yesterday instead and is obviously keen to give it a go but the way she was talking a couple of days ago she is seriously thinking about smoking again to help her lose the weight. This is the only chance we will ever have of her stopping smoking for good because trust me I know my mum. I can not let her go back to it no matter what but I need to be able to support her and help her forward with her weight loss. I really don't know how supportive her doctor is or is not being with it as she wont let anyone go with her to the appointment.
Please does anyone out there have any advice of what worked for them? She's gained about 1.5 stone since she gave up smoking. She's 60yrs old and has very poor muscling in her legs - not helping her metabolism I'm sure. The extra weight is putting a lot of stress on her legs and mobility too.
Many thanks
