Cals and Exercise - I'm Confused Please Help

SmileyShazza-> I apologize for off-top in your thread

No problem at all :)

This just highlights that there is so much conflicting information out there - in magazines, on the net, through supposed calorie counting websites that it does become a minefield for people to know which information is correct and which is not.

Steve,
1200 is the ideal amount of calories for a woman to cut back to for dieting purposes. It's common knowledge and supported by most doctors and medical websites and fitness guru's.

Smiley,
It sounds like your body very likely went into starvation mode. You should check out these two articles. LOL. I'm addicted to this site for info. It's 100% legit but you can figure out how many calories you should be getting a day, how to jump start your metabolism so you start losing weight and seeing results, as well as some other helpful tips.

I hope this all helps. Good Luck!

That's the most absurd thing I've heard today on the Interwebz.

There is no such thing as a blanket caloric intake that is appropriate for everyone.

Caloric intake is dependent on the individual's size, activity level, exercise/diet history, etc, etc, etc.

That is not common knowledge. It's a common myth. And it most certainly is not supported by the medical community. At least not as a method for long-term weight loss.

This is a generic number women pick instead of actually figuring out what would work best for them. That doesn't make it the right thing to do.

I've asked doctors in the past how would be best for me to lose weight....they all said go on a 1,200 calorie diet. I went on them and quit after a week because I was starving. (Small town doctors here, people....educated but overworked).

I think that's just a blanket type of number. I haven't asked a doctor in a while...things may have changed since then.

I've never once heard the word ideal infront of 1200 calories before. The only thing I've ever heard about 1200 calories is absolute minimum daily intake.

i will admit 1200 calories seems to be extreme, but everything i've ever read says for women to have a daily caloric intake of 1200-1700 calories / day. maybe 1200 is if you're smaller and inactive and more calories are allowed if you are "larger" or more active, so you have more energy.
