calories per day

im trying to lose weight, and i plan to eat 1400 calories per day (im counting them) and i usually get some exercise each day, but eating like this feels like its not a diet at all. should it? usually i try to focus on not eatin much, but now i tell myself that i have to hit 1400 each day, so i dont end up starving myself like i used to do...i think of it as having 1400 calories to use up, and i can basically eat whatever i want as long as i dont go over 1400...not snack foods but not necessarily tons of fruits and veggies...so should this diet feel like a diet? is there a way to tell if this will show results?

Counting calories is not a diet... all you're doing is eatting the amount your body SHOULD intake... Think of you body like a car, and you're trying to get to a certain destination... If you don't put enough oil in your car, you're not going to get there... if you put in too much, you're going to damage your car... if you put in the right amount you're going to get to your desintation without a problem...

Ideally you should eat 500 calories less than your resting/basal metabolic rate as a good place to start... having 4-5 meals per day, eatting every 2-3 hours... having at least some form of protein in each 4-5 meals...

The thing to becareful of with calories is what KIND of calories you are consuming... well if I'm on a 2000 calorie meal plan, I can just say, "Hey... I'll just have 2000 of ice cream and I'll lose weight!" WRONG... you know what's healthy and what's not, so just make smart choices and you should do fine...

& are some of many resources to use...

The amount of calories you eat will depend on several things: your current weight, height, activity level and goals.

If you have come to the conclusion that you need to eat 1400 calories per day to attain you goal, and it doesn't "feel" like a diet... then great. You don't want to ever feel like you are starving.

Proper nutrition leaves us satisfied throughout the day and keeps our blood sugar levels even. DeX gave wonderful advice.

One thing I want to point out- 1400 calories seems low for anyone. Be sure to check with a nutritionist, trainer or doctor before changing your diet. Also be wary of calculators. They give an ESTIMATE. By all means use them... for what they are worth.
