Calories Eaten/Calories Burnt

Hi
ive been told to aim for having 1700-1800 calories per day to lose weight and i burn 700 calories at the gym. Does that mean i should eat 1800 calories then burn 700 or eat 2500 then burn 700 to get to 1800 calories?

How many calories are needed to maintain or lose weight is based on many variables such as height, gender, age, current weight etc. so it's difficult to answer your question. If you really burn 700 calories during a workout then the intensity and duration is high. I'd start with 2500 calories, continue to work out and monitor your progress. If you aren't losing weight then reduce your daily calories by 500 and see what happens. You need to fuel your workouts with healthy eating and IMHO worry less about calories and more about a healthy life style. Good luck!

1700-1800 calories is probably too low unless you are only 5 feet tall.

If you tried to calculate your own BMR, I think you forgot to multiply BMR (basal/resting metabolic rate) by the daily lifestyle/activity modifier, to get your actual estimated caloric needs for your current weight.
Also keep in mind those BMR formulas can't tell whether you are overweight or a pro bodybuilder, so just because an obese person's BMR comes out at 4,500 calories, doesn't mean they should just knock off 500 calories to become healthy :)

But back on point: the best thing is to use a BMR plus actiivty modifier to get a rough estimate of where to start. then, track calories and your body changes to see if you are over or under eating based on your REAL LIFE numbers, activities, and progress.
