Calorie intake = too low?

What happens if you have a solid weight training plan, but your calorie intake isn't good enough? Right now I'm a bit overweight:

19 years old, 176/177 pounds, 5'10 or 5'11. I've been trying to watch what I eat, and I am afraid I'm not eating enough to get the muscle gains I want. I have not gained weight since I've started working out.

Here are my two theories:

1) I am gaining muscle mass, but I am loosing some fat mass at the same time. Thus, it all equals out? Probable?

2) I'm just not intaking enough food, and I'm just "toning" my muscles, not adding any actual mass. ?

What do you guys think is going on? I try to hit up the gym doing a full body workout for the past month and a half for 3/4 days a week, allowing at least 1 full day of rest. A lot of times my weight fluctuates.. I remember times when my weight was a little above 180, but many mornings I wake up and I'm down to my high 170's. Advice anyone?

Thanks,
Dan

1 is impossible. you can't gain mass and lose fat at the same time. to tell if number 2 is right or not we have to know how many calories you're taking in.

yeah you can bulk and lose fat, at least i did it.... just eat clean, run 15 mins to warmup and weight trainning...

Without the usage of AAS it's nearly impossible to bulk and cut at the same time. The order of operations in math dictates that you can only add or subract but not both at the same time and this is pretty much the same.

New trainees are a bit different but if you've been training for a bit then you pick one goal and go at it before moving to the other.

Don't go to low on calories...the body needs fuel.

biggie and evolution are rifght...u may have put muscle on which looks like you've lost fat but haven't i.e

wt at 1/6 might be 75kg...what you don't is that you are at 15% bodyfat and you know is 75

wt at 1/7 might be 78kg...what you don't know is that your bodyfat is still 15%

now the extra muscle looks as though you've lost fat but you actually have just increased muscle

does this makes sense? i no what i'm trying to say but not sure any one else will

I tried bulking and cutting at same time, it didn't work. After a month I gained 2 pounds and had the same body fat percentage.

So do you really have to stuff yourself when trying to get muslce.. :(

There's no way I can find out exactly how many calories im intaking, I guess I'll try to up it a little. Does anyone know a good article on this subject, or can someone tell me what's a good calorie # to shoot for daily?

I can definitely tell my strength has gone up.. bench press has gone up a good bit since I started.. etc. If this matters at all, I pretty much only work my shoulders/back/arms (ie. mid body & upper body) and not legs much.

That's overweight?

I'm just under 6feet and weigh 211. I guess I'm obese, lol

just sitting about or sleeping you need 12cals per lb bodyweight.
it takes 3500cals over maintanence to gain 1lb of fat,or 3500 cals under to lose a 1lb of fat.
so if you ate 500 over for a week you would gain 1lb of fat.
if you ate 500 under you would lose 1lb of fat.
that is if you dont exercise if you train you have to work out how many cals you use during your workouts plus other daily activitys and add that onto your cals for the day .
so if you weigh ie 100lbs thats 1200cals
your activitys use another 1200cals
thats a total of 2400 cals anything over that or under you will gain or lose fat

177lbs thats 2174cls a day without activitys, add up what you do activitys and how many cals that uses and you will have your total calorie intake.

Yeah well, not overweight I guess, maybe slightly overweight. I have a flabby stomach. :(

I have mostly the same stats, and the same thing happened. I started out at 5' 11" 165, and 5 months later, 5' 11" and 165. The difference is I looked about twice as big. Now, I'm about 6 months in and have gained almost 10 lbs. You have to eat like CRAZY. My stomach is pretty good, I used to have a six pack a couple months ago, I can still see it some, but that's more about body fat. If you want to lose that, just do a lot of cardio and keep a low calorie diet. But you'll probably lose weight in the process, so you kind of have to make a choice. You can bulk some and then cut, and try to lose that belly. By the way, eating like crazy means like 3000-4000 calories a day, and getting a lot of protein in. I as a rule of thumb, you should probably get 1g of protein for every pound you weigh, per day. So, I take about 170g. I can usually get in about 150g with shakes and make up the rest in the food I eat.
