Calorie counter on treadmills..

Just aquick question,
How accurate are the calorie counters on treadmills? I have one where I can put in my weight and age. Is that a good measure or is how long you keep your heart rate up a better way to judge?

They're not all that accurate. The ones that you put your weight and age in I think are MORE accurate though. It's more like an estimate I think. Not sure what the margin or error is though...

To be accurate...if you're at a gym, ask a personal trainer to put your numbers into the equation to determine energy expenditure. The tredmill should list METS for you.

It's a longer formula than I care to type out at the moment but it's basically you take speed and fractional grade and add it to 3.5 and then you'll come out with these numbers to multiply to give you how many ml per kg per minute. You then plug in bodyweight in kg, etc and come out with how many kcals per minute that you're expending.

Yep, you can use it to get an idea of your workout to workout patterns. But they typically over estimate the amount of calories you burn. Just keep that in mind. Try to workout using intervals.
