Functional Anatomy & Calcium ion Concentrations

The human skeletal system is uniquely designed to resist stress... while providing.. shape & support to the body..

The skeleton .. has a mineral component that provides rigidly.. &.. a protein component.. that makes the bone resistant to tension..
The organic compounds of the bone... meaning .. the protein component ... mainly are in the form of collagen protein fibers ... representing about 33% of the bone... while the mineral component... represents the other 67%...

The resilience/strength .. of the bony tissue ... makes the body capable of managing forces .. while.. the connective tissues.. provide the application of force ... together the tissues function to systematically producing .. &.. control motor function..

Bone tissue... is hardened.. by calcium salts.. which represent about.. 98% of the calcium storage .. within the body..

Although.. the bone is the most significant location of calcium within the body ... is not just mineral composite... it is actually very dynamic/active ... with a complex vascular system ... which allows ... for the re-absorption of calcium.. allowing the bone to act as a reservoir ... of calcium mineral ... &.. usable ... in the maintenance of extracellular calcium concentration...

⁉️say what⁉️...

When extracellular calcium levels fall... meaning ... blood-circulating-calcium-levels... fall .. too low ... calcium is recruited from the bone storage.. & ..mobilize/moved to alternate physiological destinations based on the need of the internal environment .... meaning ... moved to where it is needed within the body..

This process.. is a normal interchange .. by the body .. to maintain homeostasis/balance... when the daily calcium intake is insufficient/low.. for a prolonged period of time ...

Calcium ion concentration ... requires close management... by the body to prevent dysfunction..

Even .. small variations in calcium ion concentration... can disrupt normal physiological function.. meaning .. bodily functions...

Hypocalcemia.. which is low blood calcium.. can lead to altered neuromuscular excitability... creating muscle spasms.. &.. tetany= twitching muscles.. while... the other end of the spectrum ... hypercalcemia .. meaning high blood calcium .. can cause abnormally high deposits of calcium-phosphate.. in tissues .. leading to organ dysfunction ...& ... failure..

Due to the role calcium plays in motor neuron activities ... calcium deficiency within the body can cause muscles to lose normal function ... becoming even ... unresponsive ... this can be life threatening... when cardiac muscle activity is altered ...

Thankfully... the calcium levels within the extracellular fluids are closely regulated ... by the endocrine system ...

During hypocalcemia = low calcium in the blood ... the parathyroid hormone.. will cause increased intestinal absorption of calcium .. by the activation of vitamin-D... tubular re-absorption of calcium ... within the Kidneys.. &.. a release of calcium & phosphate from the bone tissue..

&.. of course... the opposite...

Hypercalcemia ... suppresses the parathyroid hormone activity ... &.. leads to the secretion of calcitonin which reduces urinary excretion of calcium & inhibits = stops.. the calcium loss from the bone..

This daily... balancing act of the body... if not .. kept in homeostasis ... meaning... a state of balance .. Can lead to a significant reduction in bone mineral density ... which will lead to a pre-disease-condition called... Osteopenia .... before progressing... to the disease state called ... Osteoporosis...

How... can osteoporosis be prevented ...or ... at least delayed...

The first requirement ... is to get enough calcium & vitamin D...

Second... you need to keep in mind that excessive intake of carbonated beverages & alcohol removes... the mineral from bone & decrease the bone density..

Get plenty of weight-bearing-exercise ... walking ... jogging .. playing tennis ... lifting weights... body-weight-movements ... throughout your life ... this will‼️... increase bone mass = density ... above normal values & provide greater protection... against age-related-bone-loss...
