Bulk and then cut or alternate?

Hi,

I started off training around a year ago and have put on a lot of weight. I went on a huge bulk for over 6 months and gained 20-30lb and since I had very little fat on me I could eat what I wanted. Anyway last month I cut 10lb and I'm around 170lb now. I've decided to bulk up to around 200lb but I'm worried about gaining alot more fat.

I can't really afford alot of the clean foods and I've worked out that I can get just over 2000 calories with clean foods. I'll have to get the other 1k calories through junk or at least less healthy food!

I wanted to know should I bulk for a month and cut for 2 weeks so I can gradually put on the weight without too much fat or should I bulk till I gain that 30lb like I did last time and then cut sum weight in the end?

I'm pretty sure my training is good enough and I'm going to try and eat as clean as possible so I just wanna know which way should I bulk?

Thanks.

LOL...sorry but that made me laugh. iv never heard this one before :D

you can only afford 2k of healthy food, and 1k of unhealthy junk. i dont know what your eating and considering "healthy" but im sure you can get the 3k from all healthy foods.

eggs are cheap. chicken breast isnt that expensive. beans are cheap as hell. brown rice is cheap. i get sunflower seeds(high calories) cheap at a dollar store...milk isnt that pricey(not any more than your donuts). you can get carnation milk if your really cheap(like me), carrots and brocolli are not expesive...
why is junk in your opinion so much cheaper?

the amount of calories you eat over your MT level, and the quality and biological value you put into your macros will determine if you get fat for the most part.

It can cost 2 dolalrs to get 400 calories worth of lean ham.

It costs 25-50cents to get a little debbies snack with 400 calories of trans fat.

Junkfood=cheap

lol ok you got me. but...
eggs are less than 8 cents a pop
68 cents for 8 servings of black beans(dollar store ;D)
50 cents for those little bagged planter peanut things(you get a better deal if you buy a big container for that matter)
2 or less dollars a gallon for carnation milk
rice is really cheap(even if you have to get white rice)

im just saying you'd have to be reaaaaaly poor to REALLY have to resort to junk.
i would personally rather only eat the healthy stuff than eat junk as well just to gain.

??????

Junk food is cheap, but it costs nothing if you do not buy it.

Everyone seems to think that junk food is cheaper. It is not. You can get eggs, chicken, brown rice, milk, oatmeal, and vegetables for the week for under 40.00.

Get frozen chicken breasts, frozen vegies. They will last the whole week without going bad. There are always brands on sale every week as well.

It will be less if you have a Sams Club membership.

Even if you buy more expensive food you can still eat pretty good for about 50.00 per week.

If that is too expensive, make more money.

The real world does not care if you starve, so you will have to figure it out how to get it anyway.

I absolutely love Sams Club.

I wasn't supporting his buying junk food to make up for the rest of his diet, I was just pointing out that getting alot of calories in junk food is really rather cheap.

I'm a student and since I quit my summer job to concentrate on resits I've got very little to spend. Around 100 pounds for just under 2 months and thats not counting in any other expenses.

I am looking to eat as clean as possible but wen I can get 1k calories in a 46p chocolate bar its pretty tempting!!

Also add in the fact that I'm not great at cooking I really don't have a variety of foods to eat!

I am adding some new clean food to my diet and hoping I'll soon have it as clean as possible.

Anyway, can anyone answer my original question please?

Thanks.

Oh Yea. :)

I guess you have really answered your own question. Bulk till you gain like 30 lbs. then cut.

How did you answer your own question you ask???? :D

You already know that you diet is going to be 1/3 not so good food. So why bother. The likelihood you will have good cutting results in this situation is very low.

Once you gain the next 30 you may be in a better position for a proper cutting diet.

The student excuse doesn't fly with me. I do a full time degree and just finished my second year with good results and I hold down a full time job. Only on 13k a year but not THAT bad for a student.

Also I am not a mature student or anything, I am only 20 years old. Starting my third year and hoping to keep a full time job, but may reduce office hours slightly after a few months to concentrate on Uni work.

But either way what I am saying is you should be able to hold down a job that gives you more than £50 a month to spend on food. Could your parents help you out with some extra money each week?

My girlfriend doesn't have a job and is a student but gets £30 a week off her parents for food, plus whatever I buy there when I go to visit on a weekend...so it isn't so bad for her, the rest of us need to work for our money though ;)

Goodluck with your goals!
