Bruised Patellar Tendon, How to proceed with leg workouts

Hi All, Last week I went to the orthopedic surgeon for a knee injury I have. He determined it to be a bruised patellar tendon, which he said can take several months to heal. I was told NOT to do any squats or lunges, but I can do leg presses and leg extensions. I found that strange, but he stuck to his guns. I'm guessing he doesn't know much about strength training. I feel like I shouldn't stop working out my legs for a few months, they feel strong as ever, I just have knee pain a lot of the time. So my question is, how do you think I should proceed with my workouts? I'm currently almost done with Hypertrophy 1 in New Rules of Lifting.

Thanks!

Doesnt know about strength training? hmm im sure he comprehensively knows the functioning on the knee joint and whats best. Ask him for alternatives if you dont like what youve been asked to do.

I'm sure he understand how the knee functions, but that doesn't mean he understand the repercussions of certain strength training exercises on the knee. As you probably know, machines in general are harder on joints than free weights, which is why I find his suggestion unusual. I'm not an expert on the matter, but I have read books and articles by many experts discussing the effects of using "machines" on joints.
