Brown Rice vs. White Rice

Hi all! I'm very new here. Just turned 40 and I'm going nuts. Always had a great body, but since the last two years put on twenty pounds (150) and not happy. Put a universal and treadmill in my living room and I'm working out constantly. Everyone at work keeps telling me how I "let myself go"...like I don't know...makes me mad (cuz it's my sore spot)...

Anyways, always been a junk food junkie and I'm trying to diet now in addition to exercising. What's the difference between white and brown rice? Sounds like a crazy question, but like I said I'm a junk food junkie so I don't know! Looked at the nutritional stuff on the boxes and it doesn't look like one should be any better than the other. Calories are the same and the total fat on the white rice is 0 and the brown rice 1.5. I'm totally confused... Help!

Thanks... CJ

Thanks for the reply! I'm going to check out that link now. Changing the things you eat is hard! I love pasta, cheeseburgers and any greasy cheesy thing I can find! I'm going through pizza withdrawal but determined to change it so... Good luck to you too and thanks again...CJ

White rice has a higher GI rating than brown. This means that there will be a slightly higher insulin spike when consuming white rice and it will be processed quicker by the digestive system.

Brown rice is a slower digesting rice which is beneficial during your post workout meal. I user either/or, but tend to eat brown more often, especially when cutting. Yams are another great carb source, if you like them.

A great way to cook yams is to boil them until they are just soft then spay some I cant beleive its not butter spray in a frying pan and brown the yams.

Thanks LV (I'm from CT too...Naugatuck!)...loved the articles that I read too from Jor.

I really don't know about yams...but I'll try that. I was really a junk food person and I'm getting taste for the better things. Yams were not in my diet..haha...but I'm forcing myself to eat things I never did before. Hasn't been too bad. So I'll try it...

One more question. Love the yellow rice. It says fat-free...you know the Vigo yellow rice. Is it OK or should I stick to the brown?
