Bride-to-be dies after losing 3st on her crash diet - eating just 530 calories a day

WOW.

"An inquest in Leeds was inconclusive about whether the controversial LighterLife diet - which restricts people to 530 calories a day for a maximum of 12 weeks - played a part in her death."

WOW

"For 11 weeks she ate only soups, snack bars and shakes provided by LigherLife and designed to have all essential nutrients.

She saw her doctor for two monthly check-ups while on the diet plan and attended weekly group counselling meetings."

...wow.

I know someone who did Lighterlife. She had to have a medical to be allowed to take part. Apparently (they told me) the medical said that she had a slight heart murmer and her GP refused to sign the form but Lighterlife gave her the name of another GP who retested her privately and signed the form... She lost a fair bit of weight with them though.

Her husband just went to the private GP because their surgery announced that they would not be approving anyone for it after her results came in. He did the same diet and lost a fair bit of weight too. At the end of the "no eating" period he started eating again and put it all back on.

I was drinking 1 ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight and I remember being amazed at the amount of water that they were telling her that she had to get through....

I wouldnt have done Lighterlife if they had paid me. Neither of them lost as much weight as me...

I'm just thinking... if someone has the willpower to only eat soup, snack bars and shakes (530 CALORIES!!!).. surely they've got the willpower to cut calories the right way and exercise? They'd even get to eat more.

Or is it the speed of the weightloss that they're going for?

Any doctor that will agree to put anybody on a 530 calorie should have their practice closed down instantly, and this 'Lighter Life' should be banned. They are essentially starving people, in this case apparently to death.

Had her 530 calorie a day diet anything to do with her death? I would damn well think so!

WOW, seeing this makes me very VERY mad!! I took a look at this "Lighter Life" group on Facebook and it is absolutely ridiculous with some of the stuff that their telling people... & its even more sad that people believe that this is the healthy way to go...
Im just so PO'ed right now at this company for brainwashing people into thinking that this is the way to live...

I am so glad I read this post!!

Some friend of mine suggested lighterlife to me and I was seriously gonna start it soon..now I know I should not!

Btw I know someone who has lost oodles of weight in one year following lighterlife but then shez juz starving herself! I was kinda inspired by looking at her but following such a regime is not my cup ov tea, specially now when I know how ridiculously dumb it is!

Yeah, exactly, I couldn't imagine having the willpower to deal with that, but somehow not the will power to just eat smart for a longer period of time.

I guess it's the weight loss equivalent to cramming for a test you have the next day. When you got to meet a deadline, the closer you get to it, the more disciplined you can force yourself to be. Just too bad she didn't join this forum a year ago instead, eh?

The research and experience we have with regards to very low calorie diets and this is what they come up with? Nothing but soup?

Wow, that's piss poor.

If only the likes of Lyle McDonald's work (Rapid Fat Loss) were better recognized. He doesn't promote starvation dieting, but figures people are going to do it anyway so why not go about it as safely as possible. Hence the book.

Starving yourself without maintaining adequate amounts of the essentials (protein, fats, vits and minerals) is a surefire way to screw yourself up. People forget that without the essentials, you lose lean tissue.

Skeletal muscle? Who gives a shit about that. You can and will start losing cardiac muscle, for instance. I don't know about you, but I like my heart.

Not to mention what inadequate amounts of the essentials does in terms of deficiencies and how that plays out in health and functionality.

If only there were a governing body that "cleared" such products before coming to market.

There are loads of people doing Lighterlife. I just cannot fathom it!!!!

The couple that I spoke of earlier are neighbours of mine. They knew exactly what I was doing - I told them about the forum and everything. They even saw me out walking pretty much every day. My appearance had changed dramatically so it is not like my project has been any sort of secret.

They told me what they were doing and I said that I couldnt cope with not eating like that. They said that they couldnt cope with doing exercise - even just walking!!! When I questioned how they would adjust to eating again they said that there were people that saw you through that whole stage. They were of the opinion that if it wasnt safe it wouldnt be in business...

They described the food as "milk shakes with no milk in"...

And this is the problem with most people. They lack the ability to logically and objectively assess information. It's a major failing really.

I mean, if it wasn't safe it wouldn't be on the market.

Get serious.

'The evidence cannot point one way or the other as to whether her indulging in that diet has in any way caused or contributed to her death.'

That is honestly one of the most ridiculous and idiotic things I've ever read in my life.

And, where in the F*CK was the fiance while this was happening?

This is ridiculous! I was aware that sick people with EDs pass this information along and help each other to not eat, but a company actually endorsing such unhealthy eating.

My most unhealthy endeavor involved me eating around 1,000 calories and exercising some ridiculous amount, but at the time I was unaware that it was unhealthy. 500 calories?!

Ah!

Oh man!

I don't even know where to start with this one.

I guess that if you dangle a big enough carrot in front of people some of them will jump.

It also is interesting to note that we (maybe as a culture) are attracted to the extreme. eat right and get more activity? Na, that's boring and not very exotic.
but how about eating nothing but soup and drinking this special tea from the south African continent! Wow! That's exotic and sounds extreme so it must be worth checking out.

When it comes to fitness boring is the new sexy.

I'm bring'n sexy back....... maybe.

Ah!

1,000 Calories? 500 calories!?

Holy business. I have heard pretty good things and seen great results in people living on 1300- 1500 calories with exercise of like 15 hours a week.

I am shocked, and confused. Not to say I haven't tried quick attemps at weight loss that included only eating one meal a day. It probably didn't work because there was more than 500 calories in that meal.

There are some really bad diets out there, that people actually endorse?
People wonder why i am weary of trying any franchised Diet

That's horrible. What kind of a diet would tell you to starve yourself? That's not getting into shape, that's essentially getting out of shape, so much that you can't do anything because you're constantly exhausted from a lack of caloric intake.

Oh god!!
that's chocked me
Today when I counted my calories I'll take for today they reach 515
& I said that's a lot & I wanted to cut down the meals but I changed my mind
I didn't wanna feel hunger afraid from binge later
but she did it for 11 weeks alright
my intent to do this just for couple of weeks
when I reach specific weight I'll eat right

You all must have read a different story than the one I read. The one I read said the cause of her death had not been determined.

Drastic Weight Loss Measures

I read about things like this all the time, although death isn't necessarily the outcome, serious health ramifications are.

I agree with the other post that said, "She was able to live on only soup and bars, why not do it with a healthier approach?"

I think that's the problem, is that people don't trust themselves enough to know that they could make healthy choices for themselves. They let some bogus diet that promises and unGodly amount of weight loss "fast" as the only way to achieve success.

There is so much misinformation out there and it is those desperate for weight loss that unfortunately ignore the healthy route and opt for the dangerous route which unfortunately can have fatal consequences. So sad.
