Breathing Pain, Please important

Hello,

I am able to take regular breaths with no pain, But when I take a exagerated huge breath I get this pain in my left chest.
Its not a huge pain or anything its bearable, but I dont know whats wrong.

Im just scared if I screwed up my heart or something and Dont want to kill my self.
Please can someone help me with what this is?

Thanks

It sounds like you've pulled a muscle, I had a very similar thing a couple of years back.

Because it's a pain in your chest you're gonna have to see a doctor to get it checked out but I doubt it's anything to worry about

I think you should see a doctor if it is bothering you. Without an examination no one can tell you what is wrong. I can give you suggestions, but they would all be just guesses. Usually heart pain isn't from breathing, could be lung pain or musculoskeletal pain, but again you need someone to look at you to determine this. Hope you get your answer.

Missy is right that cardiac pain usually does not increase upon taking a deep breath. It could one of several things. Firstly cardiac pain is sub sternal (meaning behind the breast bone) not over the heart itself. The pain with it is crushing kinda like an elephant sitting on your chest, it also can radiate tothe left jaw and arm. You sweat a lot and are very pale. Having said this I think you can figure that you are pretty much in the clear as far as a cardiac problem.

What were you doing before the pain started? My first thought is that you have done something that has cause trauma to the intercostal muscles and that is why only very deep breaths hurt. That doesn't mean that you got hit or anything in the ribs, it could be as simple as twisting the wrong way. It could also be something to do with your stomach. Yes I know it sounds weird but often we set patients that think they are having the big one and it is nothing more than a simple GI problem. Even eating too much can do it.

I would suggest that if it persists more than a couple days or getts worse, or you have other symptoms (sweating a lot, general weakness or feeling unwell etc.) that you get into the er and let the nurses and doc give you the all clear. It could be nothing (my thoughts) or it could be something else where in your bod that is cause your discomfort.

i think i Pulled a muscle. ITs not as painful today. I dont fee it as much, ITs when I take a deep breath my left chest gets bigger and so my chest hurts. So it should be on the muscles in my chest. It will be fine. Thanks guys

Jenn: Is the crushing pain (elephant sitting on you), the only pain associated with the the heart? I remeber when i used to play video games a lot or watch TV for ages I would get the 1000 flaming daggers in your heart area pain(left chestish)? My freind told me this was a mini heartattack LOL, which i didn't belive but could it have been something to do with the heart? I'd like to know because my lilttle brother seems to be getting the same thing every once a blue moon.

The crushing pain isn't the only sign. For women they usually think it is nothing more than heartburn. But the pain is behind the breast bone not off to the side. I would say the 1000 flaming daggers would be more of a spasm. So the symptoms are : crushing chest pain (mostly men) or severe heartburn; palor, diaphorisis (sweating), radiating pain to the left arm and/or jaw; some people have a sensory anomoly prior to (burn toast smell); Please note this is after an activity that makes you have to sit down and does not reslove after 5 to 10 mins of complete rest. Some people will also become short of breath but that comes after the chest pain- if you get short of breath first then the chest pain then it is a problem with your lungs ie. asthma can cause this. Heartburn itself or pain is not the only indicator- other symptoms always accompany it. Plus there is also an elevation in the pulse rate at rest.

Heart attacks (we call them MI's ) are becoming more common lately too. I have had 19 year old kids that were having an MI in the back of my vehicle. One of the best things you can do if you think you or someone else is having one is to call an ambulance, DO NOT move them and please please don't walk them to the car to take them to the hospital, that could be fatal. Once we get them on oxygen and hooked up to our monitors, we pick them up and move them.

Sorry for such a long answer but really thats the short version, coles notes if you will, on what to look for and what to do.

:)
