Breastfeeding + Losing Weight...what's safe and works?

Hello Everyone!

I'm in kind of a unusual situation in that I just had my second child and I would really like to loose the weight both from this pregnancy and my 2-year-old, but I also plan on breastfeeding my daughter for at least a year. (I was never able to diet after my son was born because I bf'ed him until my second pregnancy.) I have read that a bf'ing woman, like a pregnant woman should not try to diet and that bf'ing itself burns about 500 extra calories a day, so I have started by adding more physical activity with both cardio and weights and weekly yoga and also trying to eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit the junk food. Still, I'm concerned that I'm not going to get that far without reducing the calories I take in. I'm ravenous all the time and even with the extra activity and eating healthy, that's still a lot of calories. Anyone have experience with this or advice?

Thanks!

Weight Watchers has a plan for nursing moms. There is also a book called "Eat Great, Lose Weight While Breastfeeding" that would work. If you restrict your calories too much your milk supply could drop. I always noticed that my boys nursed more if I "dieted", but as they continued to gain weight and have plenty of out put I didn't think it was a concern as much as a slight inconvenience. I know a lot of nursing moms who had great success with both WW and the book I mentioned though.

I may have a million beginner questions about getting fit, but breastfeeding I know very well. Feel free to PM me with any questions about nursing! :)

yep, i actually just finished breastfeeding. heres what i read in a breastfeeding book, you need to multiply your current weight by 13, 14 , or 15 depending on activity level, 13 being low, 15 being high, and so on, once u have done that, you should add 500 calories, and that should be ur caloric intake,i.e.: 170lbs x 14 = 2380 + 500 = 2880. i did mine and assumed it was still too many calories, so i drop a few hundred calories, to make sure i was only at 2500 per day, but u can figure it own according to your own needs.
