Brandon and Ilene's weight loss journey

Hello everyone. A little about us:

I've been overweight since I was 11. After losing a parent, I turned to food for comfort. In hindsight... I probably should have used something a little less dangerous! My current weight is 352 pounds. This is definitely the most I have ever weighed. And it is slowly going up. I have horrible eating and exercise habits. My weight is completely my fault, and I want to get it under control before it affects my life any more than it already has.

Ilene was overweight as a child before developing Bulimia. She was down to 80 pounds at the age of 16 before seeking treatment, and after leveling out at 130 pounds, she has gained weight to a current weight of 225 pounds. Though I still think she is beautiful, we are both uncomfortable with our appearance and we are ready for a lifestyle change.

I guess I'll start this diary from this point on. In an hour or so we will be going to the gym (we have planet fitness memberships) and I will update the diary with our exact work out when I get home.

What I think our biggest problem is... would be our inability to plan our meals correctly. We eat out A LOT. We have trouble finding healthy foods and making healthy meals. Any kind of advice would be awesome.

goodluck

its hard if you eat out a lot but maybe try chosing a heathier option? what would you eat when going out?

You also may benefit from writing down what you are eating to help you keep on track, I have my journal here and also a diary that i write it :)

goodluck

She usually goes for the healthier options (grilled chicken, fish, lots of veggies) while I just go for whatever looks the best. Which is usually pasta smothered in alfredo sauce. oh. and the french fries. we lovvvvve our french fries. haha

Hi Brandon,

Just so you know, six months ago I weighed 375 pounds, I now weigh roughly 298. Eating healthier foods and eating out less is a great idea and something well worth working at. But also remember you can go to any sports bar on football Sunday and see thin people eating burgers and fries. How much you eat is as big a key as what you eat, maybe bigger. At least when it comes to losing weight.

So I guess step one is figuring out how much you eat and then working from there. Some folks, like me, like to count calories, but that doesn't seem to work for some people. I'm always a little hesitant to say "do what I do" because we all have different lives, backgrounds and personalities and whatever success I've had so far might not translate to anyone else but me.

As Tasha says it might help to go over what it is you're eating in a typical day. And if you're eating out a lot, you can even go through your checking account register and look at how much you're actually eating and in what time frame. Both of those could be opening, as it's easy to lose track of how much we're eating.

Sorry it has been a few days since my last post.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say we do fast food 1-2 times a day. And I know that is the majority of my problem. I stopped drinking soda for a while and along with exercise lost 30 pounds in about 3 months time. Since I've picked it up again (telling myself 1 a day won't hurt) I've gained back that weight and then some.

We've started today off good so far, with yogurt and special K cereal for breakfast. Not quite as tasty as the double Croissan'Wich I enjoy from burger king so much, but I guess no pain, no weight loss?

Lunch today looks like it will be subway. I know it isn't the healthiest option, but better than our typical meals (or at least I hear).

Sounds like dinner is going to be chicken alfredo with penne noodles and peas. One of my favorites. I have a bad feeling that it has somewhere near 5 billion calories.

Well done on deciding to lose weight!!! :)
Well the more you could reduce (even cut out) junk the faster you see results in my opinion!!
For me (when I worked - and had no time for anything) helped to plan ahead - just write a menu for the week & try to stick to it as much as possible. I even cooked a few meals and put them in the freezer - awesome time saver in the middle of the working week.
Good luck!!! :hurray:

Fast food does tend to carry a lot of calories. They put that stuff full of fats and sugars so people kinda get addicted to it. I enjoy it every now and then myself, but I do take care not to do it too often.
Subways doesn't have to be unhealthy at all, since you do decide what they put on your sandwich. If you ask for extra butter, double cheese and lots of mayo, it's a health hazard. If you ask for more greens and less sauce, it should fit into a lot of diets.
The biggest tip I have for dinners like that is to have a salad as well, so you fill up partially on something that doesn't carry many calories. It's a simple way to control portion sizes without much suffering.
