Boxing.

I hope nobody objects to me asking about boxing in this forum. I feel its the best place for the topic.

Now Ive got sky tv I've been able to watch a lot more boxing and ive been very confused about all the diffrent belts and weight classes.

Can anybodys explain why there are so many federations.
you got the WBO, IBF etc...
Do each of the diffrent federations have there own names for the weight classes and are there diffrent rules for each federation???

Wikipedia has some relevant information

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing

Talks breifly about the history and lists the different governing bodies. I'm not a boxing expert by any means but as far as I know the different world organizations are just competitors like different companies compete for any prdouct. They all have champions and to be undisputed champion they all have to recognize the boxer. There is a lot of regional organizations that have champion belts too.

As far as I know they all have very similar rules.

I have been finding UFC to be more entertaining to watch then boxing lately.

hi everybody!
yes basically all the federations have the same rules..the only difference is....who gain the money!!
unfortunately every thing is ruled by the money..so...to be clear and simple.....when some people can't find their own room( no money..or power..) in a federation..they move away creating a new one in which they are more important and can have some influence...this is basically the step which animated people ( fighters, trainers, promoters) in order to make a federation.
some of them can become important nad have a good return of audience( money) and fighters who want to be part of it...some others....they just are part of the system..and maybe, because not very popular or important, they also have not BIG NAMES or BIG CHAMPION...and so...it's easier to get a title.....at the end of everything....who will ever ask "which federation are you champion in??".....the important ( unfortunately) is...just being able to say :" i'm a champion"...sad but true..
so you'll find 3 or 4 different world champions for the same weight class...who's the best?...sometimes if you're lucky..or they confident ....you can attend a match between the champions of 2 different federations....some of them...big fighters....want to UNIFY the belts...and they start to challange all the other "champions"...
it's very sad..but everything is so linked to the money...that very often we'll never be able to see a big challange, between two great fighters, only because...it's dangerous for them fighting eachother....in case of defeat..they'd lose much more than the belt..
it's a very big and long discussion...
sorry if i started it...
i hope with my first part to have given you guys an alternative answer at the usual and more popular you'll have in here.
cheers.

Hey there manof kent, I dont blame u for the confusion but yes, Boxing has its own rules. But no matter how many federations there in Boxing, there will be always a rule for 10 count, give up as an alternative for White towel toss, and the classes will remain the same, as Feather Wieght, Light Wieght, Middle Wieght, and the last but not the least Heavy Wieght.
