Boxing Benefits

I didn't know where else to post this thread, so forgive me :)

My trainer kept me in front of a punching bag for a long time, and really, 3 minutes of that KILLED me. Probably some of the best aerobic workouts I ever got involved punching (and later, kicking) a punching bag.

What is it about these exercises that is so damned intense?

i've tried it before and i was feeling weak after only 5 minutes or so... i know why i got so tired, i didn't want to hit the bag with a weak punch, so i kept hitting hard.. hitting it hard uses all your upper body. ur back to pull ur arm back, and ur triceps and chest to push foward... soo many muscles, soo easy to get tired...

i've heard good things about punching bags, but they are difficult to work into some workout routines, so i have since stopped doing it..

Fil, you don't even have to be hitting a bag to get worn out. I think the motion of actually punching is so unnatural that it really taxes the body.

Try sparring at 3 minutes (I semi full contact spar when I can, I got kicked in the ear last night too :) ).

And Mreik, just try shadowboxing bro, its killer.

I think because you are using your muscles in a dynamic fashion and in coordination with one another is the main reason why bag work is so demanding, especially if you are throwing kicks too.It is a full body workout.

Ballast, thanks :) Thats what I was trying to get across, but you said it WAY better than I did hehe

It is mostly because it is not a natural movement for you. How many times a day to you sit with your arms out in front of you? Unless you are like my Italian talkative friends...not very often. You'll find, the more you do it the easier it gets. <-- I know...captian obvious here.

Plus, you are probably putting you body in more stress because the impact of the punches and the fact that you probably are not breathing correctly yet when punching. I know that is what happened to me when I started.

3 3-minute kick boxing rounds kicked my a$$ alone...and than there was the other guy. :D
