Body refuses to lose weight

Here's the Cliff Notes:

Scale weight has barely any relevance at all to what you're trying to accomplish, unless your ONLY goal is to get smaller. As in, lose both fat and muscle mass. As this is obviously not the case, well:

Work hard, use sound principles, get body fat testing, or measure your progress by how you look.

If that's not enough, read The Scale Mentality - Weight Loss Forum .

Basically, stop your whining, ask questions if you're at all unsure about training or energy balance, and put in the work. Striving for excellence is not a conditional thing. You don't do it because your scale, your mommy or Papa Smurf tells you, "Good job!" You do it because to be great is the human drive.

In short, what Chillen said, just not anywhere near as nice. ;) Also, get bodyfat testing means by someone else, as anything you can do yourself (without some very expensive machinery and rather sophisticated remotes, or a rather extensive collection of floaters), is unlikely to be more than nearly as much of a waste of time as worshiping your scale.

Recommend checking out the local uni/college's kinesiology department. They'll often give you good deals, and actually know what they're doing. Most "trainers" at public "gyms" know less about.. well, anything, than you do. Which is not to say the kinesiology students/grads know all that much, either, but they are usually practiced at taking proper skinfold measurements, which is all that matters for your purposes.

Edit: let me give you a real world example. I kicked the **** out of myself all summer, for which I was rewarded by gaining 1 lb. However, having had the foresight to get bodyfat testing done beforehand, and stick with it until I had some objective feedback (see: not my expensive bodyfat scale that sucks), I later discovered that I had gained 13 lbs of muscle while losing 12 of fat. Scale says, all your hard work equals failure. Bodyfat testing says, near-perfect summer. While you should remain committed either way, it's nice to get the truth when the truth is good, right? :p

Who cares about weight? a number on the scale isn't whats going to show your abs.

Your routine and eating habits sound good, if your calories aren't way beyond what one would think, I'm pretty sure you're burning fat, and gaining muscle, which is the best way to show your abs.

You don't have man boobs, you have man pecs. Big difference. Yeah, I would guess you have 10# around your waist that's covering up the abs. Dropping those 10# will expose them, but a dude that's 5'10" and 155# is gonna look kinds scrawny. I agree with the others that a little muscle mass would serve you well.

As for the calorie estimators on the cardio machine, they chronically over-estimate calories burned. That is a marketing ploy to sell their products. Us an online estimator instead. If you are really working hard, RPE = 17 - 20 on Borg scale (gasping for air and grunting single syllables), you can burn up to 10 - 12 kcal/minute, but I see cardio machines reporting 15 kcal/minute while I'm able to hold a conversation.

Somebody cue-up Social Distortion's "Story of my Life".... ;) :D

+1 on the Focus-Factor!

You'd be shocked at how much you can change your body and yet not see much results on the weight scale.

Be patient, it takes time for you to start loosing weight when you are doing it correctly. If you just keep at it you will start to see results :)

I like your man boobs! You don't have gyno, so don't think you need to be milked. You've got pecs, and yours look really good :)

Just like most people, it's the love handles that are the last to go. I think you've received good advice from the members, Lego.

I can't wait to see your next set of pics once you've made some progress ;)

Lego,

Dude.....I'm sorry, I didn't even see your concern about the moobs. You don't have man-boobs, not even close!!!!

Moobs have a distinct feature in that the fat hangs as if in a hammock or something. They'd be big, rounded, sagging downward and considerably larger. You have pecs of the ordinary variety, far from abnormal. Honestly, most the flat-chested boys in the gym would love to have 'em.

You gets what you gets.....lose a bit more fat, work some more weights and be happy with the results. You're already better-off then 90% of men out there, so just tweak the routine a bit and up the %. :D

If I wasn't clear....I meant that we're all given certain genetic inclinations towards having a certain body; don't be so hard on yourself. Do the best you can do and know you've done your best...beyond that, learn to accept and love it. We all tend to be too hard on ourselves and when I see pics of you looking just perfectly fine and yet are concerned, it rings alarm bells of being overly critical of yourself.

I know it's macho to hit the gym 5x per week, but when it comes to firming-up the chest, more then anything it's the amount of food that you put in your mouth that will dictate how that looks. I'd put more emphasis on your diet as much or more so then your weights. Man-boobs ARE excessive fat and losing fat is the best way to reduce the amount of fat on your body. Sure, it's important to work weights, but I wouldn't want to see you try to brute-build your way to where you want to be. I've seen plenty of muscular guys that have developed pecs that are nothing about being 'flat'.

Work the diet Lego....you will NEVER see 'cut' guys with any semblance of moobs! Putting on more muscle, or morel likely just making the muscle denser, will not do anything to affect the layer of fat over that pec area. Diet dude, diet! :D ...and keep-up the good work!
