ive got an ideal body fat % rather than weight as im looking to add muscle as i lose fat. the last gym i was a member at had a gadget that attached wires to your feel and hands, had you lay down and worked out body fat % (i was at about 60% then) my home scales have a body fat % function but its always been way off and the new gym im at only has a similar set of scales, i was looking at getting a hand held body fat monitor but dont know if there going to be as inaccurate as the scales or not? any advise would be great and if anyone can recommend something thats accurate, at least in your experience, that would also be a real help

Good question. I use my scales every day and the signal goes through my feet. Recently I've been 16.5-19% depending on hydration/time of day etc.
I also measure with a tape periodically and last time I got 18%.

I also just ordered a handheld which should arrive next week so we shall see how close it is. I've read that the handheld is more accurate because the feet can have such thick skin. But who knows?

This is what I ordered
4/5 with 280 reviews.

Here's my advise: Go online, maybe to Amazon and look at product reviews. There might be scales out there that are very accurate, and there might be very inaccurate hand held models. I don't know.. but that's what reviews are for.

I am also interested in this!! I use my scales for this but they are 5 yrs old from the last time I lost weight and I am thinking they are not that accurate.

I was thinking of getting new scales perhaps, but I'd like something better. I don't think my gym has anything other than scales.

I have tried using the online ones but a lot of them do t seem to take into account all the important factors.

Any recommendations would be great!

What important factors do you think they are missing?
Here's one that calculates via tape measure:
(developed by the military)

(although after looking at it, it's probably more accurate for men, since they don't have a chest measurement)

How about Calipers?

I use Accu-Measure calipers - according to their website "The Accu-Measure Personal Body Fat Tester is a precision instrument which has been shown in clinical studies to be closer in accuracy to the "gold standard" underwater weighing than any of the more elaborate methods of measuring body fat ..."

It's inexpensive, easy to use and private.

Just got the monitor delivered. BF% according to Omron is 14.5%, a significant amount lower than my bathroom scales (18%).

I worked out this morning followed by a shower and lunch. Possibly the reading is affected.

It's interesting to be able to compare and I will no doubt take multiple readings over the next few days to be able to make a sensible comparison.

Well a lot of the ones Ive seen online have weight and height only or weight and measurements but no height etc etc!!!!

Hmm may have to do some more research!!
