BMI, Kind of irritating me :(

Hey guys.

Well.. I have completely reformed my diet over the past while and have began running normally for about 45 mins a day, sometimes I would do one of these runs during the day and one at night.

At the moment I weigh 145 pounds now apparently (10.5 stone) and i'm rather short (sucks, but thats the way it is :/) 5"2 almost. Well I'm 15 so I've probably a bit to grow. Anyway! I didnt weigh myself before I started excercising but I'll get onto the point of this thread!

Apparently I'm overweight, my BMI is about 27 more or less. But I've been told by people i'm quite a "stocky" build, especially for my size.. whatever that means :S
I'm guessing its something to do with muscle, my dad says i'd make a pretty decent rugby player, my shoulders are kind of wide and my chest sticks out kind of (not really from fat, because it feels sort of firm and not flabby)
Anyway, here are my main questions:

After reading all that do you think i'm "overweight" as such? I've heard many people say on this forum that you can be underweight and have a lot of fat (which i'm sure isint really healthy)
But I dont think I'm living that unhealthily. I was.. well.. before I started cutting out the crap about a month or two ago, can most of my BMI weight come from my structure and "muscle" as it where? I'm not a bodybuilder, but I do crunches, pressups and weights near enough every night...
I have lost some weight, (a few pounds this week) which is nice. But I'm gonna keep going every day, hopefully for the rest of my life to stay in shape and healthy.
Apart from yesterday (it was my friends birthday, had a few cans of coke and some chicken.. but not much :p) I havent ate ANY crap whatsoever and its really working.

So, can the BMI be wrong? I'm guessing its more aimed towards adults than people my age but i've just began thinking my structure is affecting my weight (making me heavier)..

Arrgh im so confused >.<

I know i've blabberd on in this thread, sorry about that but I would love if some of you could answer my questions. Thanks a lot in advance everybody! :)

Yes, the BMI Can be inaccurate due to some body composition reasons. IN truth you need to calculate your BMR, and even this is an approximation science, but much more accurate.

BMI is a tricky subject to rely on solely. It really depends on the person's body type, physical attributes, and many other factors. A fit person can have an extremely high BMI ratio, but is fit. A typical fit person has a BMI ranging from 20-29, where as an unfit person can have the same ratio. So BMI really means nothing in terms of overweight or underweight, except for how physically fit you are. If you never done any physical activity, and you just eat whatever, then most likely a BMI of 27 will mean you are overweight. However, if you are doing may physical activities, and you actually watch what you eat with moderation in mind, then a BMI of 27 doesn't exactly mean you're overweight.

mate dont go off what any average ratio says (they dont take ur genetics into account) im 15 and bout 80 kg i have a little bit of fat but im not overweight cause of my build

if u look at the average weight charts i should be the fattest kid in my state buti have a high level of muscle and i high level of fitness

I think BMI's are useless if you work out, I'm still well off where I want to be (I'm too skinny) but I still have a bmi of about 28.5. By the time I look like I want I'll probably be in the morbidly obese category.

Agreed. It has me as obese. Last time I checked I have abs. Ditch the BMI

A funny thing about BMI though is that it is used to determine obesity rate state-by-state. So like all those reports about how Americans are grown obese is really just taking the BMI of people, and then get the percent that's 30 or more.

BMI is utterly useless and time and time again its shown to be so flawed....just don't even look at BMI numbers.

BMI is useful and accurate for the average person who doesn't lift weights or try to build muscle. In that sense it is accurate and saying how much of the population is obese or not
