Blister Under Big Toenail

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to the forum and I already enjoy using it as a place to keep myself motivated to continue on with my weight loss goals. I've run into a bit of a snag today though that I was hoping someone could help me with, and that's a blister under my big toenail.

I've been exercising 5-6 days a week the last couple weeks on an elliptical machine, and last night my right big toe started to hurt. I decided to take a day off today but then tonight the blister popped, which was how I figured out it was a blister to begin with... is there anything I should to to prevent infection? And also, is there anything I can do in the future to prevent this? I don't even know how it could have happened to begin with.

I used to have problems with blisters when hiking. You should buy some moleskin and put it your blister, also some antibacterial ointment on it will help prevent infection. Also buy some lubricant (they have runner's lube at many athletic stores) and lube up your toes before running if you are having problems, because blisters are formed by friction and rubbing. You should also consider wearing snug socks and shoes, not too tight not too loose, otherwise they will rub against your toes and cause blisters. Since it's your toe that got the blister the problem might be your shoes.

I can't actually put anything on the blister though because it's under the nail. It's really strange actually, I don't even fully understand HOW I could get a blister under the nail to begin with.

I've googled it to try to find information, but most people talk about their toenail being black when they get a blister, which mine is not. In fact, you wouldn't even know I had a blister under there. I only know cause it hurt and then it started draining. :ack2:

sounds more like a funky infection than a blister. I've never honestly heard of a blister under someone's nail before.

Yeah, neither had I. It doesn't seem to be an infection though. There's no discoloration or redness. It wasn't puss that came out, it was clear liquid just like a blister. It also feels better now that the pressure between my nail and toe has been relieved.

Guess I just have a crazy toe. :willy_nilly:
