Birth Control and Weight Gain

For those of you who know me, you know my history here, for those of you who don't, I guess a little background is in order.

I am 32, 5'4" and currently weight 174 pounds. I started losing weight in January 2007 at a weight of 264 pounds. Yes, I know it is taking me a long time to lose weight but for me, as agonizingly frustrating as it is, is what I need for it to stick.

Anyhoo - In October I started on the Nuvaring. I hadn't been on any type of hormonal birth control for, I would say, at least 8 years. I had been having some consistency problems with eating and working out but in November I got myself back on track with both things. I work out 5x/week and have been eating 1500 cals/day (this number may have to be adjusted upwards based on a misinterpretation of the Harris-Benedict Formula but so be it)

Over the last two weeks or so I have noticed that my weight isn't really changing despite eating in a deficit and working out my normal schedule. In addition to this, I have noticed that my abdominal area has taken on a more bloated, puffy appearance that doesn't go away.

I know that 'weight gain' is one of the listed side effects of hormonal birth control. If that is in fact what is happening here, and it may not be, how does one go about working around that? I know that if I cut my calories lower, I will just mess with my metabolism and set myself further back.

In short, how can you continue to lose weight while on a medication that has as a listed side effect, weight gain?

Thanks!

bloody men...

Bloody men.. why do they make us females take all the contraception... Well after the birth of my 4th child i turned to the nuvaring.. Cant say i can blame that for my weight...but i did notice that i would get very crampy and bloated when it was time to remove it, if i was late removing the ring i certainly felt it... i however did go on the depro provera shot, that made me put on about 25kgs... never again.. never go for a shot or an implant... i think if you are not happy with the nuvaring try the pill.. i eventually got my hubby to the docs... so fingers crossed no more kids... If you are worried speak to your doctor and keep tabs on your weight over a cycle or two... remember our bodies have a natural plateau so dont be to discouraged.. and dont forget muscle weighs more then fat....

goodluck

Thanks - not knocking myself, just wanting to keep things going in the right direction.

I am happy with the Nuvaring, I am just not sure if it is responsible for the puffiness that I am having right now or anything like that. I think that part of my issue was that my cals were too low but I'm just not sure how to work with the ring in all of this. If the cals get in order and I still have an issue I will have to deal with it I guess.

I love, love, love the pill im on now. its called Femcon. Its a chewable one but I swallow it. lol. I don't get cramps, I don't have a heavy flow, AND I don't have any bloats. I have been on three different pills since the age of 15....this one..I LOVE! been sticking with is since I was 17. I am 20 now. =) the rings and shots scare me. lol

Hormonal birth control isn't really supposed to give you permanent weight gain.

But I do believe it can increase your weight based on the time of the month. I know that when I used to take Orthotricyclen, I used to gain a lot of water weight right before my period. The difference was huge -- in the five pound range or more.

I'm taking something else now and the one thing I have noticed, which may explain some bloat and weight gain is that I get cravings for salty foods. The extra salt may help with the bloat and the weight gain. I also find that I'm really hungry and I am overeating.

I don't have advice, other than to wait three or four months for your body to adjust (that's typically the time my doctors have recommended). If the weight gain is significant, you'll know it then and you may want to talk to him/her about an alternative.

Try to get on a low-dose one. I take Yaz and I'm still losing weight the same as before I went on it.
