Billy's Mission - To Lose 80 lbs.

Good news on the scales today: 246.4!
I hadn't weighed myself in a couple of days and I was a little worried the news might be worse.

I broke my cleanse on Tuesday. Since then, I've been sustaining myself mostly on Veg soups and juices but with a few snacks in between, including a small plate of veg pasta and a ham and cheese 6 inch sandwich - and a couple of not-so-innocent snacks (2 Jamaican Beef Patties and a small packet of Skittles....yeah, naughty, I know.)

But my system is back in business and the weight gain so far has been negligible - so now it's up to me to start driving it down at a slow and steady click.

Yesterday, I went on a major grocery shopping spree, and rounding up enough fresh ingredients to make some of the recipes I picked out during the cleanse. This is my next goal: to become a handy little home cook! That'll be the key to my weight loss (along with the gym which I have yet to start due to my hectic schedule this week.)

But I'm feeling motivated and positive!

Yesterday was a day of relative indulgence, the day I've been building up to during the entire cleanse, the inevitable post-cleanse celebratory feast!

My morning was so busy I didn't even have time to make a juice, so I completely skipped breakfast. Then I met some friends for lunch, and indulged in one of my most favourite meals: Chicken Panang at my favourite Thai Restaurant. This stuff is so good, it practically has its own religious cult of followers.

I can't imagine how many calories are at work in this bad boy. It's chicken slow cooked in a thai coconut/peanut sauce/lemon grass/royal basil based curry sauce. All ladled on top of a mound of white rice (of which we had one and a half orders each!) To begin with, I had an order of spring rolls. The only act of restraint I exerted was to order a Perrier water for my beverage.

Following the feast, I had my first cup of tea: 2 milks and one sugar.
Then we went back to a friend's place for the evening where I had a couple glasses of wine and a small piece of cheesecake.

Upon returning home later that night, my girlfriend had surprised me with a treat, not for finishing the cleanse but I had some good news yesterday with regards to a project I'm working on. So to congratulate me, she bought me half a dozen of my favourite truffles from one of my favourite chocolatiers: chili chocolate truffles! (unreal!!!!)

So for my late night snack, I ate the truffles with a nice hot cup of tea (two milks, one sugar.)

So it was with a certain resigned trepidation that I hit the scales this morning, knowing full well that the news would be less than desirable.
I can't imagine how many calories I consumed yesterday but surely it was above and beyond the acceptable limits! Not that I was worried. This was a day I'd set aside for relative indulgence, so I was prepared to take a hit.

So you can imagine my surprise to find that not only did I NOT gain weight from yesterday but that I actually dropped .4 of a pound!

What the hell is with that?
How the hell did that happen?

Nevermind. Never look a gift horse in the mouth! I guess my weight loss guardian angel did me a solid and gave me a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card!

Anyway, tonight is Halloween. It's a night of parties and inevitable drinking (although I plan to be very good, very restrained.) But before all that begins, I have a big day in the kitchen, preparing the meals I've been planning for a while.

Today, the cooking begins........

lol..what happened is...you do not gain weight in one night *you were prob still digesting by morning... You may want to think about making some healthy choices this week or you might *hopefully not though* see the numbers go up when you body has had time to process the calories, and turn some into fat. Not trying to be a downer..but..its reality.
Good for you in prepping your meals and stuff for your week.
I think everyone has those days of indulgence, so if the rest of your week is good, it may all just work out fine
take care
Michelle

Well, that seems to be exactly what happened today! I hit the scales at 249!!!! (Dangerously close to the 250 mark which I swore I wouldn't hit again.)

Yesterday was a mixture of good and bad. The good?
For brunch, a halibut burrito. For a snack, a beet/carrot/ginger/apple juice. For dinner, a Classic California salad.
Unfortunately, following that, we mad three Halloween parties to attend. And while I was relatively very good, there were still a handful of cakes and snacks and drinks that came our way. At the end of the night, I had two hot beef patties on the way home.

So I'm not surprised at the gain. But the good news is, the social obligations are over and I can focus back on being good.

And the other bit of good news is, yesterday was my first day in the kitchen.

I made a massive amount of vegetable stock. And I made my first salad dressing (I've never made a dressing before) to go with an absolutely sensational California salad that was as satisfying as any meal. The salad had spring mix, white kidney beans, spinach pesto (also made from scratch), toasted pecans, cherry tomatoes, palm hearts and avocado. It was INSANELY good!

So that was a bit of a breakthrough for me. A salad that's as satisfying as a meal! Anyway, I got a full day in the kitchen - a vegan stew, a carrot coriander soup and another california salad.

FANTASTIC : We all have those moments of having things that are not the best choices for us, but..you had an AHHH HA! moment.. And that was getting in to the kitchen and discovering new things that will ultimately help you reach your goals. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!

Thank you!

Good news the past couple of days.
I'm driving the weight down slowly and steadily.

I hit the scales today at 248.2 lbs.

Also, the kitchen adventures are still going strong. I made a delicious carrot/coriander/sweet potato soup and a really flavorful Marrakesh stew over the past couple of days.

And I'm working my way through a vegan cook book. (I'm not vegan. I'm just a fan of the recipes in this book and they're really healthy vegetarian meals.)

And the other bit of good news is....

I started at the gym yesterday.

First session was just 30 minutes on an elliptical machine but I burned 441 calories.

So it's all going along quite nicely and I'm feeling positive.

An unfortunate set back....

I hit the scales at 250.2 lbs today!

DOH! :banghead:

This was my first mini-goal - not to re-enter the 250's.
So how did this happen?

Well....

I wasn't on my "A" game yesterday, that's for sure. I spent the entire day out with my girlfriend, movies, shopping....hanging out...etc. And while I was a good boy mostly, there were a few indulgences, namely, the chocolate mint patties we ate at the movies. (I guess I was hoping to get away with them due to the little stint at the gym on the previous day.)

And while the food I ate yesterday was healthy (salads, veg stews, brown bread sandwiches, eggs on multigrain bread for breakfast), I ate a LOT of it. Each meal was pretty huge.

So.....

Today I'm paying the price. No social obligations to worry about. I'm hitting the gym later on. And no indulgences. Just good, healthy food (and sensible proportions.) That's the goal. (I gotta get out of the 250's lickety split, slick.)

Scarsdale

I'm thinking of doing the SCARSDALE DIET beginning on Monday for two weeks.

Anyone familiar with it?
It's pretty archaic and seems to have been overshadowed by the Atkins diet but it's the same principle: low carbs, high protein.

I did it for three months once when I was 27 and lost 40 lbs (220-180).

I know that crash dieting is NOT the way to sustain long term weight loss - but going on this for a short term serves two of my immediate goals: to stay MILES away from the 250's - AND to continue the habit of preparing meals AT HOME! (Sure, the meals aren't as much fun to prepare but it still helps to reinforce the habit.)

Congrats on working towards your goals Billy, keep at 'em!

It's common to gain a bit of weight once you start hitting the gym, so don't let it discourage you. It's just your body reformulating itself to adjust to new activity levels, etc...

If you are a fan of vegetarian/vegan meals, maybe you might want to try going vegetarian (or at least significantly cut back your dairy/meat intake)? I went vegetarian in June and I lost 40 pounds without an exercise program. Now that I'm starting to exercise, I'm hoping to lose about 40 more.

Here are some great vegan blogs to hunt recipes on (my favorites):

Good luck!!!

Congrats on working towards your goals Billy, keep at 'em!

Thanks for the encouragement AND the links.
And yeah, I'm definitely going more vegetarian (with the exception of the upcoming two weeks on the Scarsdale diet.) I've been picking out all sorts of delicious recipes so I will peruse the blogs you posted.

Cheers.

248.8 lbs!

Back in the 240's - where I belong!!!! (Until I head down to the 230's, that is.)
Feels good to be back.

I was relatively a good boy yesterday. Fresh juice, eggs and brown bread, veggie stew, pasta with tuna. My only real bad move was I ate probably more pasta than I should've! (Gotta learn to portion control.)

BUT - no overtly naughty stuff and I'm back in the 240's.....
Whew!

Picked out my recipes for the weekend - then I'm hitting the Scarsdale next week.

No problem on the links, I looooooooooove those food blogs. Great pictures!!

This cracked me up. Rofl.

Congrats on getting back to the 240s!! Sounds like you're doing great food-wise. I am trying to get back into the 180s - just retaining water like crazy for feminine reasons. ;)

249. A slight increase. Not surprised. While I ate relatively healthy yesterday, I did have two homemade vegetarian rotis. I'd hate to think of the calories involved....but thankfully, I'm still holding steady in the late 240's. I'm psyching myself up for the Scarsdale.....

250.4 lbs! Doh!

It's my fault. I was a bit of a greedy guts yesterday.

The second half of the day, I was a good boy: bean salad, avocado, pomegranate and tomato soup.

But the first half....

Ay yai yai.....

2 beef patties, a hot chocolate and chicken panang on a mountain of white rice.

Paying the price today with a shameful return to the 250's! Gonna be REAL good today. Won't have time to hit the gym but I'm gonna watch the food intake with a fascist determination.........:gnorsi:

249.2

Alright! Back in the 240's!

It seems I'm perpetually fluctuating between 249 and 250! Gotta start driving those numbers down....

But I was a good boy yesterday: fresh juices, California Salad and a veggie curry on Brown rice.

But the best of all...

I spent nearly TWO HOURS at the gym: 30 mins on the machine, an hour long yoga class and nearly 30 mins on the weights.

My plans to start the Scarsdale are on hold for a while as I still have ingredients for a few recipes that I planned to make, and plus next week, I have a guest visiting. So I'm putting off the two week Scarsdale for another two weeks.

In the meantime, I'm gonna continue to focus on preparing healthy, nutritious meals at home - and this week, I plan to hit the gym as often as possible.

Great job on the workout! I have GOT to start working more exercise into my regimen too.

I feel you on the gluttonous weekend - I had all kinds of nonsense. :p We've got to be ruthless!!!

That California salad you describe sounds fabulous, I need to try it.

That California salad you describe sounds fabulous, I need to try it.

It IS fabulous. And completely satisfying as well.
It's easy to make. You toss your favourite greens in your favourite dressing.
(I'm using spring mix with a delicious recipe for House Dressing. I can provide the recipe for the dressing if you like.)

Then you divide an avocado and use the pieces to create a cross in the middle of your plate, sitting on top of the tossed greens, creating four quadrants.

Then in one quadrant you put toasted pecans. In the others, you put sliced hearts of palm (artichoke hearts are a cheaper alternative) and in one you put cherry tomatoes and in the last one you put white kidney beans tossed in a spinach pesto (I can provide a recipe for that one too.)

And then....

You mix it all up and WOLF it down! It's awesome. I've never been a salad maker before but this recipe has turned me around.

And by the way....

Today, I'm 248 lbs!

I'm happy about that. I wasn't particularly good yesterday (Thai food for lunch, out for drinks with friends last night) - but I wasn't particularly bad either.

So I'm happy to see a bit more weight loss. Gonna build on it today. Healthy food and I'm hitting the gym this afternoon with a vengeance!
