Bicep curl problem

Hi there, I've just recently started really getting into my weights and that but I have this problem with my left arm. I am naturally a right handed person and when I do bicep curls using it, it feels fine. But on my left arm the motion and everything seems identical but it tends to work my forearm more than my bicep... whats going on there? I don't want whacky looking uneven arms!

what exercises are you doing?
bar or DB?
Are you sure your grip is the same in both hands?

there's no way you can be using your forearm to do bicep curls unless you're moving you elbow during the motion. make sure your elbow doesn't move during the entire movement.

I'm sure

Hello again,

yeah its real weird, I am have totally made sure i am doing it the same in both arms, no elbow movement or anything... and yeah it happens when i use dumbells. I feel it in my bicep still, but also in my forearm for some reason... no such problem with ol' righty though.

the only thing i can think of is that you might be bending your wrist, similar to when you do wrist curls. If your wrists are tight/straight, then there should be no real forearm use.

Yeah its probably cos my left arm was weaker from the start or something and i've adopted a different way of lifting maybe?... i dunno, its confusing... I can't see any real difference at all between the 2 arms in grip, motion or anything. Thanks for all yah support though everyone! :) maybe i'm just useless and can't be helped haha

maybe your left hand grip strength is very weak. I know when I do curls, I grip the crap outta the dumbbell. gripping hard with a weak hand will fatigue the forearm quickly.

I could be totally wrong though...but wanted to toss the idea out.

As far as worrying about the forearm. You are actually feeling the stress on the bicep (brachioradilalis). Normally you will feel it on the left because the right side is generally the more dominant side. The left side is just weaker at this point in time and eventually the stress will dissapear and they will even out. Live through it and make sure the form is great and only increase in weight with what the weaker side can do. You don't want a bigger imbalance because you start to increase the weight on the right side and leave the left one behind. That's just nuts.

Might want to drop weight for a little while, increase reps and stop when you start to feel the other muscle being worked. Might strengthen the left a little while the right stays put, no?

also, start your curls with the left, instead of the dominant right arm.. You'll have a little more focus, and make sure you get all the reps in, even if you have to cheat a little. If you do cheat, let the weight down very very slowly...use slow negative reps to help force the left arm to grow.

Balance is the key. If you are going to lower weight and increase reps. you may still feel it more on the left until it catches up with the right. This will take time, be patient. Just make sure you keep the right side even with the left or you will run into the same problems- Just with the right side instead.
