Best sport/art for flips and other crazy things...

Hey, i have been looking at free running or le parkour to learn stuff like doing proper back flips and forward flips and other crazy moves like running up walls and flipping, hand springs, twists etc but that all seems abit to extreem to start with if you can only do back and forward flips into the pool, and you learn this stuff by urself.

So...what i was wondering was is there any sort of sport or martial art where i can learn how to do all of these crazy moves and maybe some fighting moves? Im sure it would also be great cardio :D

Thanx Heaps.

Chinese wushu, capoiera, gymnastics.

I wouldn't recommend flipping around like a gymnast in a fight though, I pray anyone I fight does that, I'd have something waiting for them when they land :D

If its flashy moves you want, Capoeira is the way to go. Hapkido and Taekwondo are also good for high flying kicks, but you won't learn those until you have been at it for 3 or 4 years in any respectable school. In Capoeira you will start to learn that stuff in the first or second year.

Yes, flips have no martial application, but you sure as hell need to know and control your body to execute them. And this is what you take to a fight. But if you still don't know how to do anything but dance around, you're gonna get owned. Lol.

Chinese wushu is a very good thing to try. After the first few forms, you should already be able to do some good arial ****. Especially since most of it nowadays is performance wushu, you can count on very flowery moves and some crazy, cool looking ish.

If you don't want to learn kicks like tornado kicks and all that stuff as well as not waste time with any groundwork, then I'd just stay away from hapkido and tkd. Basically the way you stated what you're looking for, then you should be at a school geared towards performance, not fighting. Hapkido and tkd, in my experience, are too general and won't focus enough on what you want.

Capoiera is basically that breakdance "fighting" you see sometimes. It's fun and you'll be doing summersaults and balance work straight out the door. You don't really even fight, often times it's no contact; it's just a bunch of capoiera people "playing" as they call it. Yes, it's very fun, you'll learn to flow. Plus you might learn how to play an instrument or two.

But really, gymnastics has the goods. It's just the most simple without all the other complications you'll get with martial arts schools.

::Gasp!:: Who wouldn't want to "waste" their time with groundwork. Both ground grappling and small circle stuff is teh gold. Capoiera actually has quite a bit of grappling in it as you get further into the Game.

Sorry Lei, I've the complete opposite experience with Hapkido as you had. We cover everything from dynamic striking and kicking to grappling to pressure points to cane work, etc. Hapkido is a very well rounded, practical art. I've found MMA and Hapkido to compliment each other nicely.

I know, but he's looking to just do flowery stuff and look cool.

If he wants to have both, then he's going to have to revaluate his goals and distribute them more evenly. The way it sounds now, it looks like "Hey, I basically wanna do these flips and these cool acrobatics. If I learn some practical fighing moves, then that's cool too. But wuh ev."

Yeh lei u got it. Have any of u heard of free running or le parkour? Thats the sorta thing i wana do but flips and areobatic things involved - cool looking things.

I would like to gymnastics, but being a teenager and all ppl would consier me as gay..plus i dont want to wear tights :p And if i did do gym, would we get into flips and stuff early? Coz i know this girl and shes won awards in gym but she cant do standing flips.

hmmmm  Caporeia sounds pretty good, but i think i would feel to uneasy doing 'dances' in the middle of a cricle to music with lots of ppl watching u!

By the time you're doing that, you're not feeling it as the spotlight is on you. You should feel connected with the person you're playing against and you should just flow. The people there in the pictures you see are probably appreciating the creativity of the players, set as a foil to the art as a whole.

Saying that you don't think you can do it because you would be embarrassed makes you look really ridiculous. You're basically giving up on yourself because you can't put yourself outside your area of comfort. You might as well say that you'd LIKE to learn how to do flips, but don't wanna go through the effort if you fall down and have to get back up again.

I just wanted to point that out, but anyway, just deal with it when or if the time comes.

That girl you know in gymastics is one girl. She could have her medals from doing events like bars, balance beam, or pommel horse (which, in my opinion, aside from the rings, is the most impressive), when the skills that you want come from that freestyle stuff that they do on the mat.

Anyway, check those things out if you can, the more you talk to the instuctors the more info you'll get. The more info you get, the more options you get. Don't have your sights set on only one thing, because things become a factor like location, price, instruction quality, etc.

You could be at the best wushu place is aussieland, but if they just focus on weapons and sparring tournaments, then you're not going to get what you really want.

Have your goals in mind when you talk to the school's people, discuss, learn, etc. But try to have a good idea of what you're looking for in the particular style when you go...for instance, if you go talk to gymnastics schools, ask them if you can choose the things you want, like if you don't wanna do bars, your focus could be somewhere else. Or if you go to a martial arts school, find out what they focus on, etc.

If you're just looking to learn to do back flips and stuff like that, go into gymnastics and focus on floor. By the way, male gymnasts are not gay - they're ripped and hot. Look at those muscles when they do stuff like the iron cross!
