Best Magazine

Not sure if there is a better place for this topic, if so just let me know & I can move it...

One of the rewards I stated for moving toward my goal was that if I lost 10 pounds I would get myself a magazine subscription. One of those things that I never really do for myself & I can have new material for reading on the treadmill & maybe some ideas & inspiration.

My question to the group is "WHAT IS THE BEST MAGAZINE THAT YOU HAVE SEEN?"

I'm thinking something to help me get a better healthier life.

So what ideas does everyone have? I know someone on here has a great suggestion.

i get so many magazines my living room looks like a doctor's office...

- self magazine - good health tips, recipes, general information

- fitness magazine - excellent health and well being magazine, recipes aren't that interesting, but the articles are very well done and seem to be accurate. the diet pill ads are very annoying though

- similar to Fitness but a little more woman friendly

- health magazine - i used to subscribe but i stopped - great articles but too many ads.

- women's magazine that has interesting articles - some about health and well being - some about world events as it relates to women- it's sort of becoming MS magazine to the younger generation and raises a lot of awareness of women's issues.

- excellent recipes and articles on general health... this ism y current favorite.. and it's more than just cooking.

- kind of a jack of all trades magazine - recipes/health/well being/beauty - a little bit of everything - chock full of info

I have to give a thumbs up to

I read it for the first time, since their introductory issue and it's come a long way - the introductory issue was nothing but ads - now it had informative articles on nutrition, exercise, sex (and not cosmo sex either) and general health - this definitely moved up on my list of favorite magazines

That's the reason I didn't particularly like that one. I felt that it didn't have enough recipes and cooking information within the mag. I didnt' renew my subscription.

As far as the best Mag, I have always liked Fitness and used to get Shape. I currently don't have any magazine subscriptions, and thought I'd get one for hubby for Valentines Day instead of Chocolates etc.

I think I'm going to try Muscle and Fitness Hers. ... if it's available (for me).

i'm beginning to feel that way about all the cooking magazines :D Gourmet an Bon Appetit and Food and Wine have very few recipes these days - at least recipes that I'd consider cooking at home... the only cooking magazine I really like anymore is Cooks Illustrated -which is kind of like the consumer reports of cooking -i love the product reviews and that they have no advertising.

I'm with you! I totally love women's health. I just like all the information I get. Shape is okay, but doesn't include some of the medical aspects I like. Prevention is also a pretty good magazine. But my top would be Women's Health.

The Oxygen magazine has some great recipes sometimes. I'd just check the websites though. I find better recipes online than in magazines.

Did anyone ever read Energy for Women? I think it was published in 2005 and only that year. I loved that magazine and was so sad to see it discontinued.

ETA: I guess it came out in 2002-2003 instead. I didn't think it was so long ago!

Never heard of Energy for Women, but I think we all would enjoy more energy in our lives! :)

Just finish reading Fitness & its great. I subscribed to Self, but am thinking its a great reward for every ten pouds I lose.

I can't tell you about women's mags but I can tell you the first things I consider in a men's mag:
1) Are they constantly promoting "spot reducing" for abs, pecs, etc?
2) Are they heavily invested in fad diets that have little basis in science?

If the answer to either of those is yes, I stay away from them, since the advice and/or tips they have is usually way off base.

Unfortunately, many if not most "health" magazines boost their circulations by promoting both of those ideas. After all, good nutrition and exercise is not very exciting.

yep.. how many times can you say Eat right & Exercise or that calories taken in versus Calories expended is going to equal either a gain or loss in weight. Not too exciting.

But sometimes we need the reminder & the motivation, so maybe they will figure out how to be honest & sell mags. :)

Great points TomO!
