Best gym equipment for a triathlete/ cyclist?

Hi,

I'm starting triathlons soon and would like to know what weight training and what machines I could buy would be the best, i.e. for swimming, cycling and running. I would like the weights to focus mainly on the cycling as I love my cycling :p

Budget is under £2000 (about $3400). I don't have a lot of room so I was thinking maybe free weights? but would prefer machines. The room is bout 5ft by 5ft.

Any help would be great,
thanks

Check out the TRX training system. Affordable, portable and effective. Appropriate running shoes. There are Tri Training groups around here so look into that support system if so choose. Buy a book or look on line for training routines and prepare to train more than you ever thought you would have the time or will power for.

Practice your weakest event. Swimming was mine and still is. Eat, rest and listen to how your body copes. Free weights are my fav. Work your core and practice endurance weight training. One I like is the bench press with just the bar weight alone. Usually 45 lbs do 100 to 150 reps 3 sets.

Maximize your training time by doing hill training on your bike rides and runs. It's real important how to split your training so do some reading.

RUN--BIKE--SWIM AND HAVE FUN.

I just talked to a personal trainer for a bit and told him I was a cyclist looking for OVERALL fitness.

Devise up a routine and only take a 10 second rest between sets. He said that will definitely increase your endurance, but for sure take A LOT out of you.

I've found free weights and resistance bands are THE MOST VERSATILE things out there. You can do most anything with some resistance bands. Difference is, you have to be creative with them. Many people just want "tell me what to do". Make a plan, then have somebody give you constructive criticism on what to change/fix and it will go MUCH MUCH farther.

My vote is some free weights and do MULTIPLE exercises with just one weight(set), rather than just a couple variations of the same motion on a machine.

Actually, you're better off saving the money on weights and buy a gym membership where you can do lap swimming. Weight training is a nice supplement to triathlon training but no substitute.

ok cheers, any ideas on what distances I'd need to do over the off-season. Before I've averaged over 300 miles over the winter on the bike ;), but what about swimming and running? I'm aiming to start with sprint distance and possibly move onto olympic.
