Best excercise for someone with a bad back?

Ok, I'm only 25.. I love to play sports, but about a year ago I somehow pinched a nerve in my back. Now all the things I used to love to do have become a total nightmare.
Needless to say, I've gained a lot of weight in that time period... Seen too many doctors that keep taking my money without any good results.
I need to get back to my normal weight, what would you think is the best excercise method to lose weight given my circumstances. I have started to do a lot of reading regarding eating and such, just don't know where to start with a pain free excercise that would work.
Thanks everyone

Depends on which motions create pain for you..

Whatever you feel comfortable with is of course the best option.. I'd say stationary bike, or eliptical would be ideal..

As well as swimming (if it causes no pain, and never without a partner.. just incase)

I personally do hypoxic swims in a jr olympic pool , which means you take as few breathes as possible. I use it with the freestyle and the combat side stroke..

Anyways, I'm sure some other guys have some good answers too, so look forward to hearing them.

have you done anything about the back pain? living with pain isn't something anyone, especially your age, should have to do....

what can you currently do that doesn't cause pain? walking is a good place to start...

My dad had an on-going problem with his back that was just getting worse and worse as the years went on, and no-one seemed to be able to do much to help. His back specialist suggested swimming because the water supports you, and if you take it steadily, it can be a very gentle form of exercise. The idea, I think, it to strengthen the muscles around the damaged area to take the pressure off it.

He didn't get on very well with swimming - it involved going to a pool regularly and he didn't get round to it - and after a while Mum convinced him to try pilates. She'd been doing it for some time, so she knew what she was doing, and she had a machine. He started pilates about 3 years ago, and he doesn't have any problems with his back now as far as I know, and he's also lost quite a bit of weight. It might be worth a try, but I would make sure you're taught by someone who really knows what they're doing, and is aware that you have a back problem.

Thanks everyone... I have done a lot for the back pain. I've seen a back specialist, family doctor, massuse, chiropractor(2 diff ones), and nobody has done a thing.
I will try some of the machines listed today and see if they cause pain.. If they all do I will move onto the pool then pilates. It hurts a lot when I do streching with my right leg
I can't do much without pain. Sitting down would be the only thing that causes NO pain. I used to play basketball at the gym even with the bad back(got tired of sitting around and doing nothing), the pain would usually go away after about 15 minutes of running up and down the court.
I agree with the back excercises. The chiropractor I saw told me to do some back excercises which helped when I could tolerate the pain they caused.
Thanks everyone, will go to the gym tonight and see what works

I have some back pain from my job.. and Yoga pose's work wonders.. they feel so good.. and you can stretch just as far as you can take it. After awhile you will become stonger.
