Best Bed for the Back

I am looking for opinions on beds. I am fifty years old and have been sleeping on a water-bed for about thirty years. In the past few years I have been experiencing lower back problems. However the pain is usually only in the morning. This leads me to think that maybe I need to change beds. I have heard that water-beds are not good for the back. I know I really like the comfort which helps me go to sleep. But if the bed is giving me back trouble I am ready to change.

I have heard some negative things about the Sleep Number beds as well as the TempurPedic type beds. I really think I may want a conventional bed. But there are so many choices and all are pretty expensive. I would like to get this right the first time. Is there any particular brand, and or brand and model that is considered to be the best bed for the back? Or is there another site or source for this information that you know of ?

Thanks in advance!

We just purchased a Sterns and Foster Silver Dreams. This is one of the nices things we have done for ourselves.

I have a regular mattress, but I went to Target and bought 2 boxes of the memory foam mattress toppers. They are I believe 1.5 and 2 inches thick each. I LOVE IT. It is just as much memory foam as the tempurpedic ones, but much cheaper, and its like heaven. Really helped my back.

I have lower back problems, as most people over 6' do.
I talked to my Chiro. He said to get a firm matress. He also told me when my back acts up to sleep on the floor. I too had to ditch the waterbed, it was "shagadelic" and all, but my back wasn't hearin' it. Me and my wife have a stearns/foster 50/50 split. 1 side is firm the other is medium-firm b'cuz my wife prefers it a little softer. I still have a little tightness in my lower back in the morning, but not like before. Make sure you do some slow stretching after you wake up, this also helps rid and prevent tight backs.

NEVER NEVER stretch in the morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason you have a stiff back is because your cartalige expands to protect you in your sleep. If your strech you have a much higher chance of a slipped disk and you will damage your back long term.
If your Chiro told you to strech in the morning he should be shot. Its one of the 1st things your learn.
