bent over barbell rows and deadlifts

I tried bend over barbell rows for the first time yesterday with just the bar and i felt it in my lower back. I assume I was doing them wrong? What is the correct way to be doing them to not hurt your lower back? I also ended up feeling my lower back during deadlifts, but i think i did those after the rows.

hahahah good going buddy you did your "bent over" barbell rows with a "bent" back!! The name of the exercise doesn't mean how you do the exercise directly! You do bentover rows with a STRAIGHT back and stick your ass out and grasp the bar with a WIDE grip. DO NOT cheat on your form by JERKING the bar up. You are suppose to pick it up off the ground and gradually raise the bar up and coem to the point where you almost touch your torso.

hahahhahaha man the funny thing about this is, I did the EXACT same thing and had the SAME problem as you!!! I was once a newbie, just like everyone, and I did not workout my back and i decided i wanted to workout right so i went to the exercise.com thigny and found "bentover rows" and "deadlifts". Since i worked out at home and only had a barbell, i decided i would have to do those 2. I started off with the bentover rows and found my lower back to be getting bigger and i thoguht "hey this is awesome my back feels stronger already!" Little did i know i was being a dumbass and i could broken my back. I also did the deadlifts in a wrong form, yet i felt my back was stronger.

The next morning however, my lower back was so sore and tight i felt i could not bend over. After this, i knew i was a dumbass and i sought professional help from my gym teachers right away, who taught me what i was doing wrong and how to do it. Now I have a powerful back and can do bentover rows and deadlifts with great amount of weight when i started it was hard enough for me to do them with just the 45 pound bars.

Good luck with your training and watch your back i dont want what happen to me to happen to u the pain is insane.

well, you will feel a little strian on the lower back since its stabilizing your upper body. but it shouldn't move.

sounds like you might have a weak lower back. time for some deadlifts!

When you use heavy weights in bent over row you have to keep the weight close to your thighs and bring it up to your lower abdomen, close to your hips. That reduces the strain on your lower back compared to trying to touch the bar to your chest.

aye, bent over rows, the barbell should almost rub the thighs.

and deadlifts...well son, those ARE a lower back exercise (along with hamstrings, glutes, hip flexor, and quads. even the traps are hit a little)

things like squats and deadlifts should come FIRST in your routine when the lower back is strongest and not fatigued. deadlifts + tired lower back = greater chance for an injury.
