Belly Fat (I know... I know...)

This is probably the millionth post on belly fat, but here it goes:

I want a flat stomach like everybody. I do about 300 crunches every other morning. I've been doing this for about two months.

My main question is this: When I suck in my stomach, I'm happy with how I look. I can't really even see any fat, or grab on to much. But when I release my stomach, by belly pops out. I know I have belly fat because When I'm sitting I can grab it and see it. What do I need to do to change this?? I'm a fairly active guy, so I don't see why I would have fat. I thought that by building up my stomach muscles I've have better form, but I don't.

Another thing: I watch my calories, each a relatively low carb diet, and eat protein. Maybe I'm not eating enough? Yesterday I had half a pound of grilled chicken breast with walnuts, and miso soup with bean curd for lunch. For dinner, I had three large raviolis with tomato sauce and half a dozen shrimp with some whole grain bread and a salad. Throw in a beer and some wine :)

I know some of you would say to eliminate pasta altogether but I really don't eat alot of pasta - it's more the exception.

Any suggestions? I keep hearing that the belly is the first place you lose weight. However, I just can't. I don't have fat anywhere else except recently my chest... ahhh getting older stinks :ack2:

Here's a little back history if you're interested...

- I'm 6'4", 36, and weigh 220 lbs

- through my entire youth i was a tall skinny kid with some muscles. i never worked out and didn't really play sports, but i was usually doing physical labor.

- in my late 20s I started doing computer work, so I became more sedentary. But I was still physically active. Through my 20s I ranged from 180 - 200 pounds.

- by the time I was 34 I weighed 230 pounds. I attributed it to diet and lack of exercise. So I started biking/running regularly. And curbed my caloric intake. I lost about 10 pounds pretty quickly. After the first ten pounds, I had a very difficult time losing any weight.

- that was two years ago. Since then, no-matter-what-I-do, I can't get past 212. And for some reason I'm currently back to 220. Granted, it's winter, so I'm a little less active. But still, I do walk alot and I watch my calories - perhaps too much.

If this is indeed the millionth post on belly fat - you've obviously not read any of them then...

You cannot spot reduce... your body is going to lose fat where it's going to lose fat - some people lose it in the belly first, others not so much.

Consistent behavior and changing habits long term are what will get you where you want to be.. .

and please do read the stickied threads -there's a lot of good info that will dispel some of the myths that you currently have...

thanks for the advice....

I agree about myths, not that I would ever get conflicting advice on this forum....

for example, whenever I've discussed my caloric intake with regard to weight loss on this forum, I've been told that I'll never lose weight if I'm only consuming 1700 calories a day because my body will try to hoard fat in response.

Yet in this sticky the poor guy is eating 1200 calories a day, maybe less!!! And nobody is scolding him.

I could read all the stickies in the world and still be dubiously informed.

You're not everyone else tho.

What works for one guy, will more than likely not work for you.

Read the stickies. And configure and tailor things to YOU not to someone else. You gotta do research as well as asking questions, 'cause you can't solely rely on others responses. You also need to find what works for you. 1700 might be high, but if it works then go ahead.

I would agree completely, using a forum for something as individualized as a weight loss program is not a something you would do with the idea that each post has biblical truth to it that will apply to you. I spend hours working with clients and getting to know them before I can even start to forulate a dietary plan, and even then it will change as the weeks go by and I see how they react and how it fits into their lives. Your best call is to take what is useful (which I know can be hard if you are just starting off- but there seem to be some good posters on the forum) and discard what is not. There are many paths to the top of each mountain.

Warmest regards,

Kevin Richardson
